Il volume prende in esame gli anni della formazione di Renzo Piano, vale a dire quelli che precedettero l'exploit del Centre Georges Pompidou. Il sorprendente successo ottenuto da un architetto allora poco più che trentenne nel celebre concorso internazionale del 1971 ha messo per molto tempo in ombra le sue precedenti esperienze, che sono invece fondamentali per comprendere non solo la genesi del Beaubourg (concepito insieme con Richard Rogers e Gianfranco Franchini), ma anche di tutta la sua produzione successiva. Il fitto intreccio delle sue complesse radici culturali, che si diramano in molte direzioni differenti, viene ora finalmente districato da Lorenzo Ciccarelli, che per primo ha potuto accedere agli archivi della Fondazione Renzo Piano. I capitoli del volume «tentano di disciplinare in una più sfaccettata conoscenza il magma che sta all'origine delle opere giovanili di Piano, cercando di conservare i tratti rapsodici di un vero e proprio "ritratto dell'artista da giovane"». Subito dopo la laurea, Piano costruì una serie di innovative strutture sperimentali, grazie alla sua naturale inclinazione verso le coeve ricerche sui processi di prefabbricazione e al suo attivo interesse per l'industriai design. I più significativi lavori di quegli anni sono le coperture in elementi piramidali (1964-1965) e in elementi gonfiabili (1966), il laboratorio di falegnameria (1965), lo stabilimento per l'impresa di famiglia (1966-1968), le strutture a guscio (1966-1968), l'abitazione a pianta libera (1968-1969), lo studio Piano agli Erzelli (1968-1969), il padiglione per l'industria italiana all'Expo di Osaka (1969-1970). La concezione e la realizzazione di queste opere sono, almeno in parte, frutto del dialogo che il giovane Piano intratteneva allora con alcuni maestri italiani (da Franco Albini agli esponenti della «cultura politecnica». This book explores Renzo Piano’s formative years, before the major achievement of the Centre Pompidou. The striking success of an architect little more than thirty years old in the famous 1971 international competition has long tended to eclipse his previous experience, which is fundamental to understanding the genesis not only of the Beaubourg but all Piano’s subsequent work. The dense ramifications of his experience, spreading in many different directions, have now finally been retraced by Lorenzo Ciccarelli, the first scholar to have access to the archives of the Renzo Piano Foundation. The chapters of the book seek ‘to offer a coherent and many-sided understanding of the magmatic energy that drove Piano’s remarkable works, while preserving the rhapsodic qualities of a true “portrait of the artist as a young man”.’ Immediately after graduating, Piano built a series of radical and innovative experimental structures, combining his mastery of prefabrication with an instinctive interest in industrial design.
