197057955Madrid Spain: n.p. ca. 1970. Two black & white photographs on glossy photo stock sized 11.75 x 16 in. and 11.75 x 16.5 in. w/ no photographer’s imprint or markings on versos or w/in images NF. Two exceptional photographs of Spanish classical guitar making with one image showing Hernandez 1895-1974 leaning over at work on a guitar back and the other with him facing the camera over his work bench and tools strewn about. Hernandez and Victoriano Aguado b. 1897 began working together in a piano workshop in Madrid which survived the Spanish Civil War until it closed in 1941 and they set up their own workshop to restore pianos and antique furniture. However Aguado’s enthusiasm and skill as a guitarist and Hernandez love of music and skilled craftmanship led them to collaborate on crafting a couple guitars inspired by Sainz de la Mata at the Conservatorio de Madrid and Modesto Borreguero former pupil of the famed Manuel Ramirez. The response was so great to their first productions that they decided to turn entirely to guitar production and after their first year as luthiers they had a waiting list of 70 customers. In the early 1970’s after Aguado retired Hernandez was contracted by Yamaha to instruct their apprentices in the development and refinement of the Yamaha Grand Concert series of Classical Guitars considered today some of the best caliber ever produced by the company.
