The scientific study of Turkey and its history and culture in Czech lands dates back to the 19th century. Founders of this branch of "Oriental studies" were Max Grünert 1849-1929 Jaromír Bretislav Kosut 1854-1880 but especially their luminary student Rudolf Dvorák 1860-1920. Dvorák finished his doctoral studies in Leipzig and became a professor of Oriental philology at the Charles University in Prague. He is well known for his critical edition of the poetic work of the 16th-Century poet Baki 1526-1600 the greatest ghazal writer of Turkish literature whose ghazals were "minutely tooled with the care of a jeweller". Dvorák's work on Baki's Diwan is presented here in its completeness in the very rare FIRST EDITION one of Brill's pioneering works on the subject. For the evaluation of Dvorák's translations see Ludek Hrebícek "Preklady Rudolfa Dvoráka z turectiny" 1961. A complete bibliography of Dvorák's work can be found in "Archiv Orientální" 28/1960.
