Page 79 & 81 has a one inch tear on the fore edge center area. Outside cloth has spots which is the main reason why this book condition has been graded just as good. First edition thus with the copyright and title page sharing a single date of 1889. Swing was a United States teacher and clergyman who was the most popular Chicago preacher of his time. In April 1874 he was tried before the Presbytery of Chicago and branded a heretic. Among his aberrant doctrines were his views on the Trinity he veered toward unitarianism salvation he urged that people were saved by works that supplemented their faith and hell he suggested there was no such place. An attractive example of this signature. Minor adhesive staining on reverse as well as notations from the recipient which reads "Received Aug 4th 1886. M. Henry Pfaffle born 1862 Minonk Ills." David Swing 1830-1894 is of German origin and was born in Cincinnati Ohio. In 1852 he graduated at Miami university at Oxford Ohio. He was called to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chicago in 1866 uniting it with the North Presbyterian Church to form the Fourth Presbyterian Church. He was accused of heresy while there and the bitter trial and struggle led him to resign his position. Within a week of his resignation his popular appeal led to the formation of a new church. He was a newspaper writer and essayist and is renowned as an editor who dealt with current events. He was a member of the Chicago Literary Club from 1874 to his death in 1894. He was the first Chairman of the Committee on Arrangements and Exercises and was offered the presidency several times. He presented twelve papers of which "A True Love Story" was the Club's first published paper. He is the author of "Club Essays" and other works. Not published Paperback books

1830139087London: R. Carlile 1830. First edition of this pamphlet published in support of the 1830 Swing Riots in which agricultural labourers destroyed threshing machines and workhouses across southern England and East Anglia. The pamphlet purports to be the autobiography of Captain Swing like General Ludd a fictitious figurehead of the movement whose name was appended to many threatening letters in the riots. The publisher Richard Carlile issued numerous publications in favour of the riots including in his journal The Prompter. In January 1831 he appeared at the Old Bailey on charges of seditious libel which resulted in a sentence of two years' imprisonment and a large fine which he refused to pay thereby extending his sentence by a further six months.
