1944171071Camden NJ: RCA Victor Division 1944. From the collection of Rolling Stones drummer and jazz aficionado Charlie Watts: a delightful set of promotional cards. Jazz artists include Duke Ellington Fats Waller Tommy Dorsey Artie Shaw Glenn Miller Dinah Shore and Lena Horne. From the sweeter side come Perry Como Sammy Kaye Charlie Spivak The King Sisters and from out of left field Spike Jones. Fats Waller's death is remarked on his card Glenn Miller was evidently still alive - "enlisted in the Army September 1942" - so these cards must have been issued sometime between December 1943 and December 1944. 16 colour-printed post-cards 140 x 83 mm together with the original printed envelope with metal "butterfly" clasp closure. Cards very slightly rubbed the envelope a little soiled the clasp rusting but overall very good. unknown

1939List3675New York: Exclusive Publications Inc 1939. Nine pieces of sheet music. Folio. Titles include: “Azureâ€; “Caravanâ€; “In a Sentimental Moodâ€; “La De Doody Dooâ€; “Lost in Meditationâ€; “Prelude to a Kissâ€; “Scattin’ at the Kit Katâ€; “Solitudeâ€; “The Gal from Joe’sâ€. Generally very good plus to near fine with light handling wear; one piece “La De Doody Doo†signed by cartoonist Billy DeBeck. Covers bright with striking graphic illustration. Very good plus to Near Fine. An uncommon and quite visually appealing group of Duke Ellington sheet music issued by Exclusive Publications the publishing company established by Ellington’s manager Irving Mills during the 1930s to control and promote the band’s repertoire. Mills’s publishing strategy allowed compositions by Ellington and members of his orchestra to be circulated through sheet music and recordings while remaining closely tied to the Ellington organization itself a system that helped solidify Ellington’s growing reputation as a major American composer during the swing era.

The cover designs are especially attractive with a highlight being the signed copy of “La De Doody Doo†signed by the illustrator Billy DeBeck. DeBeck was one of the most popular cartoonists of the era producing the Barney Google cartoon. Musically the collection includes several of the most enduring compositions associated with the Ellington orchestra. “Caravan†written with trombonist Juan Tizol became one of the band’s most recognizable pieces with its distinctive exotic harmonic color. “In a Sentimental Mood†“Prelude to a Kiss†and “Solitude†are among the defining jazz ballads of the twentieth century. Ellington first recorded “Solitude†with his orchestra in Chicago in January 1934; according to band legend the piece was composed in the studio twenty minutes before the recording session began. Other titles in the group—“Azure†“Lost in Meditation†“Scattin’ at the Kit Kat†and “The Gal from Joe’sâ€â€”reflect the collaborative environment of Ellington’s orchestra where musicians such as Juan Tizol contributed important compositions and Mills often participated in the publishing and lyric-writing process.

Overall a visually appealing and historically significant group from the golden age of the Duke Ellington orchestra. 1830139087London: R. Carlile 1830. First edition of this pamphlet published in support of the 1830 Swing Riots in which agricultural labourers destroyed threshing machines and workhouses across southern England and East Anglia. The pamphlet purports to be the autobiography of Captain Swing like General Ludd a fictitious figurehead of the movement whose name was appended to many threatening letters in the riots. The publisher Richard Carlile issued numerous publications in favour of the riots including in his journal The Prompter. In January 1831 he appeared at the Old Bailey on charges of seditious libel which resulted in a sentence of two years' imprisonment and a large fine which he refused to pay thereby extending his sentence by a further six months. Octavo pp. 24. Woodcut title vignette. Uncut in recent marbled wrappers. Occasional peripheral nicking yet an excellent clean copy. Goldsmiths' 26453. unknown
