191424671New York: H.P. Hanaford. Good. 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket general wear some fraying to cloth at spine ends exposure of boards at bottom corners light spotting on front cover hinges a little weak rear hinge partially cracked but still holding; see note re annotations in the name index. B&W photographic plates About 2/3 of the volume given over to what's promised on the title page -- "an encyclopaedia of biography of notable men and women in music and the drama" basically brief biographical entries on approximately 600 individual actors singers playwrights producers composers authors etc. Sometimes not so brief as a number of them run more than a full double-columned page of fairly small print. There is also a fully-name-and-title-indexed chronological roster of "Metropolitan Premieres" with casts of "new plays and important revivals produced in New York from June 1 1910 to August 30 1913" as well as similar rundowns of operas produced during that same period by the leading grand opera companies in New York the Met Boston Chicago and Philadelphia. NOTE that a one-time onwer of this volume has annotated the biographical index with small black dots next to the names of those who were deceased; spot-checking a few names I estimate that these annotations were made sometime around the late 1940s. .
