72755Autograph musical quotation signed and an autograph letter signed by Maurice Ravel. The quotation 3 bars from his Chansons madecasses notated on a two-stave system with holograph title lyrics tempo directive and instrument labels. The letter in French is addressed to "My friend" in French stating that he received his note when leaving Geneva and mentioning two places he might be when he returns at Christmastime dated Paris 15 December 1928 With Hotel D'Athenes" stationery. Both matted and framed together with a commemorative medallion. The entire piece measures 19 inches by 27 inches. A striking piece rare and desirable. Maurice Ravel was a French composer pianist and conductor. He is often associated with impressionism along with his elder contemporary Claude Debussy. In the 1920s and 1930s Ravel was internationally regarded as France's greatest living composer. The Chansons madecasses Madagascan Songs is a collection of three art songs by Maurice Ravel written between 1925 and 1926 for voice mezzo-soprano or baritone flute cello and piano with words from the poetry collection Chansons madecasses fr by Evariste de Parny. The song cycle consists of the three titles "Nahandove" "Aoua" and "Il est doux". They are dedicated to the American musician and philanthropist Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. unknown books

The final section has his press interviews between 1911 and 1933 with all the material fully annotated. In addition there are sixteen plates and nine appendices as well as a unique discography. Each of the piano suite's six pieces was dedicated to the memory of a fallen comrade in arms. The 'Rigaudon' for example was dedicated to the composer's childhood friends Pierre adn Pascal Gaudin the 'Prélude' to Lieutenant Jacques Carlot a cousin of Jacques Durand who had transcribed several of Ravel's works and the 'Toccata' to Captain Joseph de Marliave the husban of Marguerite Long." "In a letter of 17 May 1911 two days before the première Ravel wrote: 'What I've tried to do is fairly ambitious: to breathe new life into the Italian opera buffa: following only the principle . the French language like any other has its own accents and inflections of pitch.' 13596Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An elegant AMQS from the important French composer penned on his monogrammed stationery. Ravel has written 5 bars from his third waltz of Les Valses nobles et sentimentales notated on a hand-drawn stave. Addressed to a Madame Catherine Parker in Chicago with her name and address typewritten above the quotation and dated 27 January 1924. 1 page 4to personal stationery; separations at folds repaired verso with cello tape vertical fold touching holograph date with some loss faint uneven toning. Together with a reproduction portrait photograph.<br>The piano version of Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales was published in 1911 and an orchestral version was published in 1912. The title was chosen in hommage to Franz Schubert who had released collections of waltzes in 1823 entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. The piano edition is published with a quotation of Henri de Régnier: "â¦le plaisir délicieux et toujours nouveau d'une occupation inutile" the delicious and forever-new pleasure of a useless occupation. The suite contains an eclectic blend of Impressionist and Modernist music which is especially evident in the orchestrated version. unknown books

Rare autograph musical quotation on an album page two measures the instantly recognizable tune from Boléro signed "Maurice Ravel" and dated 17/1/32 and signed additionally beneath on the same date by the important pianist so closely associated with the composer Marguerite Long.  In fine condition also signed on the verso by the pianist Alexander Borovsky. 5.2 x 7.5 inches 13 x 19 cm. <br style="">The premiere of the G major Concerto by Ravel conducted by the composer and featuring the pianist Marguerite Long had taken place just three days prior on January 14 1932 at the Salle Pleyel after which the two musicians had immediately embarked together on a European tour that would last until April. At the premiere in a program largely repeated on the tour the Concerto had appeared in a program of Ravel works exclusively including Pavane pour une infante défunte and Boléro. Long herself reported that Ravel grew so tired of Boléro that when she would hum the tune in his presence he would snap: "Quit singing that" to which she would retort "Oh! my friend you shouldn't have composed it then!" As quoted in Cecilia Dunoyer "Marguerite Long: A Life in French Music 1874-1966" p. 95<br style="">Originally composed as a ballet commissioned by Russian actress and dancer Ida Rubinstein the one-movement orchestral piece Boléro was premiered in 1928 and is Ravel's most famous musical composition.  Nevertheless it is surprisingly uncommon in musical quotations from the composer perhaps as Long reports because he himself grew to find the tune tiresome!<br style=""> unknown books

Piano score to Ravel's ballet in three scenes signed and inscribed opposite the title page by Pierre Monteux who conducted the work's premiere in 1912. He has boldly signed and inscribed to his sister-in-law Hilda Davis wife of bandleader Meyer Davis: "As the creator of this score whose name has been omited sic -- I do not know why!! I am going to dedicate that copy to my dear sister in law Hilda Emery Davis with my love." Indeed although the names of the original dancers including Nijinksy as Daphnis choreographer Michel Fokine and scenery designer Léon Bakst are all listed on the title page Monteux's name does not appear. A lovely inscription showing Monteux's characteristic good humor and charm! Softcover with light brown textured paper slipcovers printed in red and black in an elegant box bound in blue cloth. Some light wear to the edges of the box and slipcovers but the score itself in fine condition. Orenstein Ravel: Man and Musician p. 177. <br style="">Ravel began work on the score in 1909 after a commission from Sergei Diaghilev. It was premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris by his Ballets Russes on 8 June 1912. At almost an hour long Daphnis et Chloé is Ravel's longest work. In spite of the ballet's duration four discernible leitmotifs give musical unity to the score. The music some of the composer's most passionate is widely regarded as some of Ravel's best with extraordinarily lush harmonies typical of the impressionist movement in music. Even during the composer's lifetime contemporary commentators described this ballet as his masterpiece for orchestra with Stravinsky hailing it as "one of the most beautiful products in all of French music."
