Translated from Jerome Ravel's original French manuscript by W. Corbyn. Includes cast list with Antoine Ravel in the title role and Jerome Ravel as Don Brocolo. Jerome and Antoine Ravel were part of the performing Ravel family who first came to the United States in 1832. After touring in the United States and Europe for many years they retired to France in about 1867. Very scarce. Puisque malheureusement ils ont plus d'appétit que de dîners, je veux les rapprocher de ceux qui ont plus de dîners que d'appétit. Cette heureuse réunion servira les écrivains et les lettres" (p. 8). Édition originale, très rare, de cet ouvrage "si fameux qu'il fut sans cesse réimprimé et compris dans de nombreux recueils gastronomiques" (Oberlé). Cet "innocent badinage", publié anonymement, chante les manières, pour les hommes de lettres, de s'infiltrer aux tables des riches. À la suite du poème satirique se trouve un "Extrait d'un grand ouvrage intitulé : Biographie des auteurs morts de faim" : y sont réunis Homère, dit le "roi des gueux", Milton, qui crut "sottement" pouvoir conserver ses idéaux républicains à la Restauration, ou encore Cervantès, "qui mourut pauvre comme il avoit vécu". Charles Joseph Colnet du Ravel (1768-1832), fils d'un garde du corps de Louis XVI, fut élève de l'École militaire de Paris, où il eut pour camarade Bonaparte. Il devint libraire au Palais Royal et publia des ouvrages anti-pamphlétaires assumés, notamment le Journal d'opposition littéraire (1800).
