First Edition. Orenstein: Ravel Man and Musician p. 228.

L'Heure Espagnole was first performed in Paris at the Opéra Comique on May 19 1911 to a libretto closely based on the play by Franc-Nohain.

Madame Jean Cruppi the dedicatee convinced the director of the Opéra-Comique Albert Carré to stage the work in spite of its risqué story line. "In a letter of 17 May 1911 two days before the première Ravel wrote: 'What I've tried to do is fairly ambitious: to breathe new life into the Italian opera buffa: following only the principle . the French language like any other has its own accents and inflections of pitch.' At the same time he referred to Musorgsky's Zhenit'ba 'The Marriage' as the work's only real ancestor. It also forms part of a larger group of Spanish works that spanned Ravel's whole career and the necessary Spanish colouring provided him with a reason for a virtuoso use of the modern orchestra which he felt was 'perfectly designed for underlining and exaggerating comic effects'." Roger Nichols in Grove Music Online. Indeed composer-writer Reynaldo Hahn somewhat critically referred to Ravel's technique as "a sort of transcendent jujitsu."

Noted music critic Georges Jean-Aubry 1882-1949 "belonged to a circle of avant-garde musicians and littérateurs and was a frequent contributor to periodicals. Encouraged by his 20-year friendship with Debussy he wrote enthusiastically in support of contemporary French composers noting similarities between their music and that of the 18th century Couperin Rameau. He wrote perceptively in praise of Spanish composers Falla Granados Albéniz but rejected German Romanticism as expressed in the works of Wagner and Strauss." Grove Music Online. A. ""Pas le temps de bien entendre les mélodies grecques qu'il interprétera aussi bien sans mes indications d'ailleurs"" ""No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"" Montfort l'Amaury 9 novembre 1926 13.50 x 10.40 cm une page Autograph letter dated and signed by Maurice Ravel 2 pages on a cardboard note with letterhead bearing his monogram and his address ""Le Belvédère Montfort l'Amaury S.& O."" The composer preparing to leave for Switzerland puts his affairs in order and addresses various directives to his correspondent. The year 1926 had seen the birth in Paris of l'Enfant et les Sortilèges his celebrated lyrical fantasy on a text by Colette. Ravel receives ""une lettre de Bochie"" ""a letter from Bochie"" - patriotism never being far away! - and recommends one of the airs from his work: ""Je sais qu'on m'y demande des mélodies pour une Koloratur soprano l'air du Feu s'impose"" ""I know that they are asking me for melodies for a Koloratur soprano the Fire's aria is essential"" . ""S'il y faut de la dédicace on la remettra à mon retour"" ""If a dedication is needed it will be done upon my return"". He peppers his note with some humorous touches: ""2 reçus que j'ai oublié de laisser hier au bureau car je n'y étais pas passé uniquement pour l'apéro"" ""2 receipts that I forgot to leave yesterday at the office since I hadn't gone there solely for the aperitif""; ""une lettre du Courrier Musical : s'il n'y avaient pas ajouté un timbre je ne vous aurais même pas prié de leur répondre"" ""a letter from Courrier Musical: if they hadn't added a stamp I wouldn't even have asked you to reply to them"". I believe that Warnery is coming to the office in November and I will ask you to ask him too whether it is useful for me to send to the directors in Geneva. Please ask him to excuse me it's frightening what I have to do before my departure. No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"". Charming and aesthetic letter from the composer featuring important compositions for voice and orchestra. unknown

Superb letter from Ravel with contrasted and incisive handwriting in which he hastily postpones a concert appointment. Respectueuses amitiés de votre dévoué"" Dear Madam A thousand apologies for the misunderstanding which is undoubtedly my fault. I did not remember at all that you were not free this evening. If you are free tomorrow Saturday I would be delighted. I ran to Châtelet and managed to have the day changed for my seats. Would you be so kind as to let me know either by telegram or by telephone message. Pneumatic messages do not reach Levallois. Once more forgive me and until tomorrow evening I hope. 191013796Paris: Durand & Cie 1910. First. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Piano score to Ravel's ballet in three scenes signed and inscribed opposite the title page by Pierre Monteux who conducted the work's premiere in 1912. He has boldly signed and inscribed to his sister-in-law Hilda Davis wife of bandleader Meyer Davis: "As the creator of this score whose name has been omited sic -- I do not know why!! I am going to dedicate that copy to my dear sister in law Hilda Emery Davis with my love." Indeed although the names of the original dancers including Nijinksy as Daphnis choreographer Michel Fokine and scenery designer Léon Bakst are all listed on the title page Monteux's name does not appear. A lovely inscription showing Monteux's characteristic good humor and charm! From the estate of Monteux's daughter Nancie Monteux Barendse.
Upright folio. 10 x 13 inches 25 x 32.5 cm. 114 pp. PN D&F 7748. Softcover with light brown textured paper slipcovers printed in red and black in an elegant box bound in blue cloth. Some light wear to the edges of the box and slipcovers but the score itself in fine condition. Orenstein Ravel: Man and Musician p. 177.
Ravel began work on the score in 1909 after a commission from Sergei Diaghilev. It was premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris by his Ballets Russes on 8 June 1912. At almost an hour long Daphnis et Chloé is Ravel's longest work. In spite of the ballet's duration four discernible leitmotifs give musical unity to the score. The music some of the composer's most passionate is widely regarded as some of Ravel's best with extraordinarily lush harmonies typical of the impressionist movement in music. Even during the composer's lifetime contemporary commentators described this ballet as his masterpiece for orchestra with Stravinsky hailing it as "one of the most beautiful products in all of French music." Monteux recorded the work later on with the London Symphony in 1959. Durand & Cie hardcover books

1958blb01685
Paris: Durand & Cie 1958. 1st. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Beautiful book - the 1958 printing of the 1925 first edition. ""Nowhere is Maurice Ravel s ability to conjure up the world of a child more vividly revealed than in the web of fairytale and reality imagination and intense sensation that is woven through his opera L Enfant et les sortilges The Child and the Enchantments. The opera s libretto by the French novelist Colette was drafted following a commission from Jacques Rouch the visionary director of the Opra de Paris. In mid-March 1916 Colette sent her sketch to Rouch who offered it first to Paul Dukas and then to Stravinsky; barely a fortnight earlier Ravel had left for the Western Front as an army driver. That September Ravel serving somewhere near Verdun was offered the third refusal but although a copy of Colette s text was mailed it never reached him. Ravel finally received and accepted the commission only in the spring of 1917 and it was not until well after the end of World War One that he began work. Oh! Cher ami when oh when the Divertissement pour ma.petite-fille wrote Colette to Ravel in the summer of 1923. If he didn t get a move on this work that she had first conceived as a Divertissement for my daughter was going to turn into one for her granddaughter petite-fille instead. In the spring of 1924 with a premire for the new opera confirmed at the Thtre de Monte Carlo rather than in Paris as originally foreseen Ravel seriously set to work on completing L Enfant.
Durand & Cie hardcover
