Rather than a portrait it is best understood as one of Ira Gershwin's characteristic spontaneous doodles: whimsical understated and gently performative. The figure reads almost as a self-effacing stage bow - an elegant visual flourish that mirrors the tone of the inscription itself. Such drawings when present add a distinct personal dimension to Gershwin inscriptions and are highly prized.

This copy embodies a rare and meaningful intersection of three major figures in twentieth-century musical theater:
George Gershwin - whose music defined an era; Ira Gershwin - custodian of that legacy and voice of its refinement
and Leslie Bricusse - heir to that tradition bridging Broadway and the modern musical.

The layered inscriptions correspondence and added materials create a dialogue across decades - transforming the volume from a musical anthology into a living document of artistic lineage.

A deeply evocative association copy - uniting autograph material presentation inscription and original artwork-linking the Gershwins directly to one of their most important successors.

A copy that transcends its bibliographical importance to become a piece of musical and cultural history. 6038GEORGE GERSHWIN 1898-1937. Gershwin was an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned popular jazz and classical genres.TLS. 1 pg. 8 x 10. March 31 1931. New York. A typed letter signed George Gershwin to Mr. Simon Bucharoff: Ive been looking through your book called A sic MODERN PIANISTS TEXT BOOK and fine that it is practically complete from a pianists standpoint. If I were to go on tour playing the piano I feel that your book would be the only one necessary to take along so far as developing and keeping up the technique is concerned. I will be happy to recommend your book wherever possible. Good luck to you. Simon Bucharoff 1881-1955 was a Russian-American pianist composer and educator who lectured and taught on the piano and musical composition. His textbook on the piano was published in 1931 and Gershwins endorsement surely would have been used for marketing and commercial purposes. The same year this letter was sent Gershwins Of Thee I Sing became the first musical comedy to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The letter is paired with a black-and-white image of Gershwin. Both are mounted on white in a black wooden frame. All are in fine condition though the letter has some folds and the signature is somewhat light. unknown

Such paired inscriptions are exceptionally rare preserving not only authorship but dialogue: a call and response in verse.

Lady in the Dark itself stands as a landmark collaboration uniting Gershwin with Moss Hart and Kurt Weill in one of the most innovative musical plays of its era blending psychoanalytic themes with sophisticated lyricism. That this copy should carry a later inscription to Bricusse - whose own work helped define the next generation of musical theatre - creates a compelling bridge between traditions.

A remarkable association copy - elevated by wit reciprocity and the rare survival of a creative exchange between two master lyricists. The Special Detroit Symphony Concert featuring Gershwin conducting and on the piano highlighted some of his best work including 'Rhapsody in Blue' and 'Porgy and Bess.' The concert was well-received and Gershwin was invited to perform the next season; however after Gershwin returned to Beverly Hills to prepare for another concert he began to suffer blinding headaches and a recurring impression that he smelled burning rubber. At his Los Angeles performance on February 11 1937 Gershwin normally a superb pianist suffered coordination problems and blackouts during the concert. These headaches and olfactory hallucinations continued for months until his collapse and subsequent coma. In the early hours of July 11 1937 doctors at Cedars removed a large brain tumor but unfortunately Gershwin died that morning at the age of 38. unknown
