American composer and pianist George Gershwin's orchestral compositions spanned the genres of popular jazz and classical music and are now considered to be some of the most important musical works of the twentieth century. Gershwin began his career composing Broadway theatre works with his brother Ira Gershwin and soon became a major figure in musical theatre in New York City and later Hollywood. "In one of his few prose writings George provided an introduction for the song book. What is most important. is that it contained the original published version of each song followed side by side by George's 'improvised' versions of the songs" Carnovale 14. A loving and insightful history of Ira and George Gershwin by entertainer singer and the “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook†Michael Feinstein related through twelve chapters each highlighting an individual Gershwin song from ‘Strike Up the Band’ 1927 to ‘Love Is Here to Stay’ 1938. Includes a CD of Michael Feinstein’s original recordings of each of the twelve songs profiled in the book. During their six-year partnership the two became close friends. Feinstein blossomed under Gershwin’s mentorship and Gershwin was reinvigorated by the younger man’s zeal for his and his brother George’s legacy. No other writer could give us such an authoritative inside perspective on these titans of American culture.†Sadly George Gershwin passed away in 1937. In 1986 as a tribute to the music and the men he loved Feinstein recorded his first CD ‘Pure Gershwin’ which was released the following year to great acclaim.
