brossura I "Tre pezzi in forma mela" non sono soltanto una sfacciata parodia dei "Tre pezzi in forma di pera" di Erik Satie ma un doveroso tributo ad un musicista senza il quale il '900 non sarebbe stato lo stesso. Per capirne a pieno il senso è necessario almeno accennare alla personalità del compositore francese, sicuramente eccentrico, ironico, anticonformista, sarcastico ma assolutamente colto. Tutto il Novecento musicale è in qualche modo debitore a Erik Satie, per quanto la "grande musica" non l'abbia mai neanche accostato ai grandi della sua epoca. I "Tre pezzi in forma di pera" non sono soltanto il frutto della sua stravaganza artistica e musicale, ma sono soprattutto un modo sottile ed intelligente per polemizzare con gli altri compositori, e colleghi, a lui coetanei: Debussy, Ravel, Stravinskij, Mahler. Con i "Tre pezzi in forma di mela" l'autore crea nuove sonorità, spesso dissonanti, affiancate a momenti di grande lirismo romantico riuscendo così a creare un nuovo tessuto armonico-melodico compatto, dialogante, sicuramente ricco di contrapposti che non sfociano mai in contrasti. Un discorso musicale appunto stravagante, ironico, mai scontato che stuzzica l'interesse dell'ascoltatore sin dalle prime battute e lo conduce alla scoperta di nuove sensazioni e nuove emozioni.

Custom Quarter Calf Clamshell Box with Art Deco fabric pasted down on other surfaces. Very Good. Charles Martin. No. 95 of 225 with a total issue of 900 copies. Folio 40 by 44 cm. 20 pochoir plates 20 pages of Satie's music with music notation. The music score is printed but can easily be mistaken for manuscript handwritten with a fountain pen. The Martin pochoir plates are magnificent and although they were created before the supposed debut of Art Deco in 1923 they capture perfectly the Art Deco aesthetic. The clamshell box is 42.5 by 47.5 cm and 4 cm deep. The boards of the portfolio have a considerable amount of soiling with several dampstains overlapping on the front cover but the design of the front cover still impresses and it suffers no significant loss of integrity in our view -- the dampstains could pass as deliberate marbling we think on the underlying paper and even to some extent on the title overlay sheet. The portfolio is lacking its ribbon ties and there are a few chips on the spine edge of this paper. The first title leaf has a fair amount of foxing and dusty soiling in its margins with less on successive leaves. Most leaves have a modicum of soiling virtually always by the edges and not significantly disconcerting in our view. Early leaves do has some edge roughness including short closed tears and light creasing. Best to consult our photos to get a solid idea of what we are loosely describing. The clamshell box has some scuffs on the calf and other light wear. Overall we consider this a quite attractive copy and can comfortably peg it as Very Good. Lucien Vogel hardcover
