Devono essere qui compresi gli album nati come un progetto unitario e come tale realizzati, che hanno cambiato il vocabolario e la sintassi di un linguaggio musicale di sintesi come il rock, gli album che hanno aperto strade nuove magari senza percorrerle davvero, tessere di un mosaico che si compone di tante individualità, stili diversi, affermazioni artistiche contraddittorie. La lista disegna così una collezione di base con la quale è possibile comprendere e parlare il linguaggio del rock, ma anche una storia di questa musica, intrecciando tematiche e suoni secondo un disegno abbastanza complesso che si semplifica notevolmente se si prendono in considerazione i capofila delle varie tendenze e le "pietre miliari" da essi prodotte.
