His opéras comiques and recitative comedies for the Paris Opéra enjoyed unparalleled success in the 20 years up to the French Revolution. Many of his works were staged abroad and a number were revived in the early 19th century in Paris: several survived through the middle decades albeit with updated orchestration. . His Mémoires are essential reading for the detailed account of his operas his musical and dramatic theories and his unabashed self-projection." M. Elizabeth C. His opéras comiques and recitative comedies for the Paris Opéra enjoyed unparalleled success in the 20 years up to the French Revolution. Recognized immediately as Grétry's best as well as largest work to date Zémire et Azor had immense international success it was given at the King's Theatre London in 1779.
