If the version is by Schubert himself after all . the setting could in connection with the motto point to Schubert's friendship with his duet partner Josef von Gahy. Ant. Diabelli et Comp. Printed note at the base of many pages notes "Litolff's Bibliothek classischer Compositionen : Schubert's Lieder Gesänge und Balladen"<br/><br/>Litolff was a composer but is best known for his classical music publishing. Wikipedia referencing Grove Music Online notes: "Litolff became friends with the music publisher Gottfried Meyer of Braunschweig English: Brunswick Germany; and after Meyer's death he married the widow Julie in 1851 having finally been granted a divorce from Elisabeth as a new citizen of Brunswick. This second marriage lasted until 1858 when he divorced her and once again moved to Paris." OCLC dating is very inconsistent from early 1860s to 1880s.<br/><br/>Based on the liklihood that Litolff would have set up his operation in Braunschweig when he lived there and expanded to Paris when he moved we've dated these volumes to circa 1858 the end of his second marriage. His unusual interest in the march scarcely stemmed from any enthusiasm for war but rather from the great range of stylistic possibilities it afforded from funeral march to evocations of toy soldiers. The best of these marches which include the six Grandes marches of 1824 exploit the full range of four hands while preserving a sense of intimate conversation." Maurice J.E.
