12208Dated "Dimanche" no year. Three pages 8vo browned paper fragile slightly chipped small closed tears on folds. Levy was the patron of St Saens during his exile in London in 1871. In 1872 Saint Saens composed Menuet en Valse op. 56 which he dedicated to Felix's wife Sarah Levy. The letter reads: "Sunday My good friend A thousand pardons for not having written to you sooner. I have started to work again and this makes me the most unreliable correspondent in the world. We will not come for dinner. I had to make a choice not wanting on the one hand to leave my mother when I am in Paris and fearing on the other that she will have a lapse in her diet and that it would happen too often. But J will certainly come to see you and when the weather is nice both of us will come. I went to lunch at Rueil this morning and I regretted not seeing you there. Madame Encort once again charmed me with her voice and her talent. All my best regards to Madame Levy and with my very best wishes to you C. Saint-Saens" "Dimanche Mon bon ami Mille fois pardon de ne pas avoir vous repondu plus tot. Dated "Dimanche", no year. unknown
19689London and Eastbourne: between 1918 and 1937. Finck was a well-respected and much-loved figure on the London musical and theatrical scene. His 'In the Shadows' was among the last tunes played as RMS Titanic went down. This miscellaneous collection of nine items in fair overall condition on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE: Autograph Manuscript by Finck contained names and outlines of anecdotes for inclusion in his memoirs. 2pp. 12mo. On letterhead of 212 Finchley Road London. As an example here is the text at the foot of one page: 'Include A. C. M. Club in Club stories. R. A. Roberts – Colisseum “By God! I'll ride to York.†Ralph Reader “Have you ever written a Ballet – about 50.†“Have you ever arranged one.â€' TWO: Autograph Card Signed 'Paps' from Finck to his wife Mabel 'Darling Mams'. On letterhead of the Grand Hotel Eastbourne; 27 December 1918. A high-spirited missive beginning: 'I hope you all arrived safely & lost neither the bags or dogs.' On the address side Finck writes: 'I sent the wires I had a share I'm sending parcel to <Brennan>. I tipped the Chambermaid. I cannot get Laundry done. I've been for a week I had a rotten lunch. I'm having tea I bid you adieu.' THREE: Typed contract between Finck and the London publishers Hutchinson & Co. for a book to be titled 'In the Chair'. 19 October 1937. Signed by the firm's chairman Walter Hutchinson 1887-1950 and witnessed by 'W. T. Kimber' who was to go on and found his own firm. Possibly an intended follow-up to Finck's 'My Melodious Memories' which the firm published in 1937. FOUR: Typed Letter Signed from <James Baine> of London literary agents Curtis Brown Ltd. 20 October 1937. Regarding Item One which has been 'duly stamped at Somerset House'. FIVE and SIX: Manuscript Letter addressed to 'Dear George' the author's initials as signature being indecipherable. On letterhead of the Savage Club London. 6 December 1920. Thanking him for the 'generous cheque': 'but for those damned Cassells I would not have taken a penny'. Enclosing a Barclays Bank cheque for four guineas to 'Dr. Conran' signed by Finck 29 October 1927. Endorsed on reverse: 'p.p. P. C. Conran F. E. Munt'. Written over the image are various signatures in pencil including that of Finck. EIGHT: Typed carbon copy of letter from Finck to Sir Landon Ronald at the Guildhall School of Music. 19 May 1924. Accepting 'the Diploma of Fellowship of the Guildhall School of Music which the Music Committee of the Corporation of the City of London have so graciously offered to me.' NINE: Typed note: 'Mr. Herman Finck is of the opinion that there is something very illogical in the demand for a tax on his income from a Government which by rendering through noise his house useless for a composer to work in makes the earning of that income impossible.' On reverse in pencil: 'Book Mams “You've done a job of work in your time!â€' London and Eastbourne: between 1918 and 1937. unknown

The gelatin silver photograph 258 × 202 mm captioned in print in the bottom margin 'Witold Lutoslawski Composer/Condutor sic 1987' with the ABC logo is signed using a silver felt-tipped pen; in fine condition. The photograph is accompanied by a typed letter signed by Peter Dennison Professor of Music at the University of Melbourne to the Hon. Barry Jones Parliament House Canberra at that time the Minister for Science. The letter dated 24 August 1987 goes into some detail about the circumstances surrounding the signing. 'I asked him about a recording of "Chain 3" and he said that it wasn't recorded and he knew of no plans to record it. It was however composed only last December and it will probably take some time before the record companies realise what a stunning piece it is'. 76103Very Good. Quarto one and a half pages on one leaf 7 November 1882. Light horizontal and vertical creases where folded for posting; small piece of clear tape to a short split at one end of the crease across the middle on the blank bottom half of the second page well clear of any text; an appealing item in excellent condition. The catalyst for the discord appears to have been Hippeau's biting lampoon of Gounod in the issue of 29 October 1882. Saint-Saëns had hitherto been listed prominently on the covers as an official collaborator of the magazine; his name is absent from the issue of 13 November. His relationship with Hippeau however amicable was already strained. 'The clearly pro-Wagner inclination of the editor quickly created a violent polemic between Hippeau and Saint-Saëns founder of the Société nationale de musique. Saint-Saëns harshly criticized Hippeau's Wagnerian opinions considering them a danger for the future of French music' Doris Pyee: 'La Renaissance musicale 1881-1883' Baltimore 2007. <p>The lengthy letter pulls no punches. After some initial expressions of friendship Saint-Saëns leaves us in no doubt about the strength of his attitude and sentiments. A broad translation of the second part follows: 'Standing back to avoid being hurt is not in my character. I must be forthright and no finessing of details can save my name at the head of a journal like a banner from being associated with it in the eyes of the public. The stance of the journal not being in accordance with my ideas I cannot allow my name to remain attached to it. My decision I have told you and I repeat it again is irrevocable. I do not know what obligations you are under and I am not anxious to know. I only regret in every respect that you have failed to understand the advantage you might have gained in publishing a paper that is truly French as well as truly modern. <p>Now it is too late; you have equivocated too long and if against all probability you wished to take this path it could be only with a new journal and a new organisation. I do not know if you know me well enough to understand what it has cost me to act in this way. I hope you do however and will not cease to count on your friendship and assure you that you may always count on mine in everything that does not do damage to my artistic conscience. Affectionately yours C. Saint-Saëns'. unknown
