L'indagine si svolge attraverso la lettura dei luoghi cruciali dell'opera latina in cui il maestro domenicano tedesco definì il concetto di relatio, e ripercorre in questo modo le diverse fasi e i diversi aspetti della sua teoria: a partire dagli anni delle prime Quaestiones parisienses sino alle ultime formulazioni in Expositio s. evangelii sec. Iohannem. Viene proposto inoltre un commento analitico delle Quaestiones parisienses VII, VIII e IX di recentissima edizione, in cui Meister Eckhart discuteva dalla cattedra di Parigi proprio il problema della relazione.
