A partire dai classici viennesi, e sempre più fino ai nostri giorni, le biografie dei musicisti han potuto basarsi su una massa di dati, reperti, testimonianze e lettere che appare molto ricca quando paragonata con la documentazione che ci è pervenuta su Johann Sebastian Bach come musicista, e ancor più come uomo. Per aggirare questa grave carenza nel costruire una biografia di Bach, Peter Willams ha scelto una strategia estremamente impegnativa: egli segue quasi passo per passo la scarna biografia (il Necrologio) pubblicata poco dopo la morte di Bach e curata dal figlio Emanuel e dall'allievo Agricola, e legge, analizza e interpreta le notizie che essa riporta sullo sfondo di tutta la documentazione attinente a noi disponibile, oltre che delle sue enciclopediche conoscenze della cornice storica e musicale, immaginando scenari possibili, alcuni più probabili, altri meno, altri ancora assolutamente convincenti, anche se la decisione di accoglierli rimane comunque al lettore. Di fronte a questa straordinaria capacità dell'autore di porsi domande e di immaginare possibili risposte alle quali il materiale biografico e lo sfondo storico possano prestare consistenza, il lettore è chiamato a partecipare attivamente, in prima persona, accogliendo uno o l'altro degli ampi quadri che Williams ha la capacità di delineare nel suo esame sistematico della vita di Bach come compositore (una "biografia musicale"), e quando possibile come uomo. Un altro aspetto eminente di questa biografia è che l'autore è stato anche un importante esecutore all'organo e al clavicembalo della musica per tastiera di Bach e della musica tedesca, francese e italiana coeva. E quando questa conoscenza da virtuoso, che consente di accedere alla viva materia musicale, per così dire, dall'interno, si trova a congiungersi con una vocazione profonda allo studio della prospettiva critica e storico-musicale, si rivela spesso, come in questo caso, una fonte di penetrazione e di intuizione unica e impareggiabile. A ciò si aggiunga che la conoscenza diretta degli organi storici di tutto il continente europeo, acquisita da Williams in anni di viaggi anche nell'allora difficilmente penetrabile Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, era ed è ancora un unicum tra gli studiosi dello strumento.
Three volume boxed set compilation of sheet music from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven Gurlitt, & Grieg. 150 pages in large format per book with intro to each musician in English, French and German. Books show little to no wear with no marking of any kind to the interiors/ texts. Each book has about 40 pieces, book one is split between Bach and Haydn, book II between Mozart and Beethoven, and book III has about 60 pieces by Cornelius Gurlitt and Edvard Grieg. The box shows considerable wear but is still intact. A very large assortment of music arranged for piano.
