"The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion1 German: Johannes-Passion BWV 245 is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach the older of the surviving Passions by Bach.2 It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7 1724 at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church.34 The structure of the work falls in two halves intended to flank a sermon. The anonymous libretto draws on existing works notably Brockes' and is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of John ariosos and arias reflecting on the action and chorales using hymn tunes and texts familiar to a congregation of Bach's contemporaries.5 Compared with the St Matthew Passion the St John Passion has been described as more extravagant with an expressive immediacy at times more unbridled and less "finished".6 The work is most often heard today in the 1739 G. Uncommon novel set in Old Portage Colony a communistic community in South Dakota dealing with their attempts to relate to the "outside world." According to the jacket blurb the author " is one of the few 'outsiders' who have been allowed to penetrate the isolated Hutterite communes eight of which are in South Dakota two in Montana and nearly thirty in Canada. He became interested in them while doing research in attempts at communistic and mutualistic living in the United States. One hundred forty-nine such experiments had failed. Only the Hutterians who first came to this country in 1874 remains have kept their fences strong and taut against the world. He found their 6000 followers--about 200 to a commune--living without personal possessions luxuries amusements working unitedly 'for the good of all rather than for the pleasure of one." . Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Introduction by Gil Rob Wilson. Richard Bach's first book Stranger to the Ground is above all else an insight into the character of a man whose great compulsion is to measure himself against storm and night and fear. On the surface it is the tale of a memorable mission of a young fighter pilot utilizing his skills in a lonely duel with death. Yet between the lines emerges the portrait of the airman as a breed probing outward but even more significantly inward.
