51-3754Paris Lapina imp. circa 1918. Original color lithograph. 79 x 58 cm. Very good. Normal fold marks. Mounted on archival paper. image: In the foreground beneath a pine tree three French soldiers poilus gaze across a sunlit rural valley beyond a post and wire border fence. In the sky beyond a barrage balloon and airplane rises the splendid vision of Strasbourg cathedral flying the French tricolor. A quotation appears upper left and top and bottom are decorative bands of tricolor flowers and laurel leaves. text: .Ce ciel est notre azur Ce champ est notre terre! Cette Lorraine et cette Alsace c'est à Nous! Victor Hugo .This heaven is our blue sky this field is our land. This Lorraine and this Alsace are ours!LabelJean-Jacques Waltz 'Hansi' was born in Colmar part of the German occupied Haut Rhin. He was a fierce French patriot. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts Lyons he returned to Colmar where he began to write and illustrate articles and books ridiculing the German authorities in Alsace and Lorraine. He was condemned for high treason in Leipzig in 1914 but jumped bail and fled to France via Switzerland. He joined the French army as a private but was transferred to propaganda work. His style blends caricature with popular images in the style of Epinal. ‘Images d’Epinal’ were coloured woodcuts of contemporary subjects widely distributed in France. Hansi’s portrait of Alsace under French rule is represented as though it were a fairytale land with the Cathedral literally glowing on the horizon. Paris, Lapina, imp., circa 1918 unknown

191859552Paris: Lapina. Good. 1918. Softcover. Original WWI poster by the Alsatian artist known as Hansi. Hansi's real name was Jean-Jacques Waltz. Hansi was born in Alsace in 1873 after the Germans took it in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. He became an artist and author who used his work to attack the Germans. He became very popular in France and hated by the Germans. Hansi was arrested several times by the Germans for making fun of them in print. In WWI Hansi fled to Paris and worked as a translator and artist for the French. The Library of Congress translation of the title is "Subscribe to the 4th Loan and the French Flag at Strasbourg will announce the reign of peace of liberty of justice. " Strasbourg cathedral in the capital of Alsace is shown flying the French flag. The main body of the poster is bright and colorful. The border is chipped with some tears. There is a tear through the main body of the poster. The poster is currently professionally protected on posterboard and behind plastic. 1912007388Paris: H. Floury 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hansi and Victor Huen. Folio 35 by 28.5 cm. 104 pp. with color lithographic illustrations on virtually every page often with the illustration an underlay in part or whole to the text and some illustrations on two pages. While a children's book this was written when Alsace and Lorraine were a part of Germany having been ceded by France as the settlement following France's humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871 and so Hansi's book was very much a political statement of allegiance to France which at the time of his writing this was on the verge of entering World War One against Germany and three years after the publication of this copy France would regain Alsace. This and Hansi's many other books make him an unique and most beloved writer/illustrator of Alsace and France in general and his magical illustrations convey the values of Alsatian folk art in their color and simplicity. Condition: cloth binding browned around perimeter and the entirety of the spine. Some edge rubbing and fraying of fabric. A slight shake to the binding. Endpapers with narrow chipping along edge. Leaves age toned but mostly clean. H. Floury hardcover
1920002014Paris: H. Floury 1920. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hansi and Victor Huen. Oblong measuring 32 by 24 cm 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Nostalgic look at Alsatian village of yore and as much of Hansi's writings about the French-ness of the village and demonizing the German occupiers who were only recently driven out at the time this copy was issued. The illustrations exude the naive charm of Hansi's best work whose legacy was to create an enduring visual image of Alsatian life. The decorated cloth boards have soiling and the fabric is worn by the corners and the spine extremities. Inside the pages have age toning but otherwise are clean. H. Floury hardcover
191614018Paris: H. Floury 1916. Very good plus. First edition of this French large-format picture book history of the contested Alsace region then under German occupation - published at a time when even speaking French in the region was against the law. From the cover illustration of l'Oncle Hansi reading to children dressed in traditional Alsatian garb to the final passage detailing the Germans' violent oppression of French language and culture L'HISTOIRE D'ALSACE makes a powerful historical case for the French identity of the region. An especially nice copy of a book generally found in poor condition. 13.5'' x 10.75''. Original blue cloth pictorial boards expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Edges stained red. Black-and-white pictorial endpapers with stork pattern. Illustrated in color. 104 pages. Binding with mild edgewear a hint of soil. Small bookseller's label to front pastedown removed label to verso of front flyleaf. Leaves evenly toned. Clean and bright. H. Floury unknown
