Edition originale de cet album pour enfants, fortement emprunt du contexte historique de la première guerre mondiale : les images idéalisent les villages alsaciens et leurs traditions tandis que les textes sont sans concession vis à vis des allemands. Le sentiment français, alsacien en particulier, exhalté par l'auteur n'a d'égal que la beauté des images in et hors-texte qui le portent. La narration rend compte de la vie quotidienne et de la difficulté de vivre en temps de guerre et d'annexion.
