Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued.

A CHILD'S VISION OF ALSACE AT THE MOMENT OF LIBERATION.

A richly illustrated patriotic children's book issued at the close of the First World War celebrating the return of Alsace to France. Published for Christmas 1918 the work presents an idealized vision of Alsatian towns and villages newly "delivered" combining regional architecture daily life and strong national symbolism.

Hansi-one of the most important visual interpreters of Alsace-deploys his distinctive decorative style to create a unified visual narrative filled with tricolor flags cockades and folkloric detail. 1918277727Paris: H. Fleury 1918. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine binding. “Un peu de texte et beaucoup d’images pour les petits enfants allies†by “L’Oncle Hansi†otherwise known as Jean-Jacques Waltz an Alstian artist and staunchly pro-French activist. As only the French can do he started publishing in the early 1900’s satirical works making fun of the German tourists. His drawings for children’s books are charming those in Le Paradis Tricolor being no exception. A work dedicated to freedom for his fellow comrade in Alsace the title bespeaks Waltz’ nationalistic leadings. Patterned endpapers and board charmingly bound in striped fabric of Alsace; with evocative illustrations many of them full page. A light stain to the front board; otherwise a clean and bright copy. Mylar has been custom cut to protect the binding. Near Fine binding. H. Fleury unknown

1912007388Paris: H. Floury 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Hansi and Victor Huen. Folio 35 by 28.5 cm. 104 pp. with color lithographic illustrations on virtually every page often with the illustration an underlay in part or whole to the text and some illustrations on two pages. While a children's book this was written when Alsace and Lorraine were a part of Germany having been ceded by France as the settlement following France's humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871 and so Hansi's book was very much a political statement of allegiance to France which at the time of his writing this was on the verge of entering World War One against Germany and three years after the publication of this copy France would regain Alsace. This and Hansi's many other books make him an unique and most beloved writer/illustrator of Alsace and France in general and his magical illustrations convey the values of Alsatian folk art in their color and simplicity. Condition: cloth binding browned around perimeter and the entirety of the spine. Some edge rubbing and fraying of fabric. A slight shake to the binding. Endpapers with narrow chipping along edge. Leaves age toned but mostly clean. H. Floury hardcover

1915V75330Paris: H.Fleury 1915. Hardcover. Very Good. every opening with color illustrations including 16 large full page illustrations Hansi & Huen. Large Quarto 330-276mm Pictorial cover in colour on pale blue cloth minor edge tanning but illustration and gilt titles all bright and without scratches etc All edges red. Blank leaf half title titlepage Why he wrote this book 100pp. Very mild tanning to margins and two small indentations to haLf title else a lovely crisp copy with fine strong clean paper throughtout. With the original flying storks for which the Alsace is known on the endpapers. Written because the author remembers his student days at the German school at Colmar when the Professor was continually denegrating the Frence student and forced them to learn only about the great history of Prussia. Accordingly during the First World War Waltz has written this book to teach about the great history of the Alsace not through the eyes of the Germans who had controlled Alsace since 1871 - "L Annee Terrible" but through the eyes of the French. Begins in the Gallic period ending with the beginning of WW1 rallying against German imperialism "let us hope for better days my children; because the future does not belong to the good lord and not to the ugly man who is a pan-Germanist". Excellent copy. H.Fleury hardcover
