Slightly worn; some browning heavier to margins; occasional foxing; one signature partially detached. First Edition later issue; the first issue was published in November of 1847. McCorkle p. 269. Hofmann p. 137 "later issues bear the year to the title".<br /> <br /> "The Second Symphony coheres by virtue of a web of recurrent thematic strands. The technique of motivic recall is enhanced by Schumann's employment of contrapuntal combinations. Specifically the chorale theme introduced midway through the finale is integrated with the opening theme of the first movement also a chorale in the symphony's concluding passages. The displacement of the finale's initial march-like theme by a pair of interwoven chorales in essence lifts the Second Symphony from a secular to a quasi-religious plane." Minor wear and scattered spotting to wrapper margins brief split to a couple map folds else a Very Good or better bright and sound example.<br /> <br /> Useful map to the New York City-holiday seeker with railway lines to all the surrounding resorts and hotels of the area. Issued as a sort of premium by the lacquer manufacturers in charmingly illustrated wrappers depicting a man surprised by a bulldog while pasting signs to a wooden fence--his bucket and brush are clattering to the ground as he hurdles over the fence in fright. The signs he has mounted all feature promotional text for Moller & Schumann products: baking varnishes and Japans turpentine lacquers for canned goods and tinware etc. The center sign reproduces a letter from the Department of State awarding the company a certificate from the Sydney International Exposition of 1879. Richard Schumann 1864- 1945 war ein deutsch-österreichischer Astronom und Geodät. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit machte er sich um die Grundlagenvermessung Österreich-Ungarns verdient und führte u. a. hochpräzise Azimutmessungen im Netz 1. Ordnung durch die sich noch 80 Jahre später in einer Diplomarbeit als Nullmessungen für geodynamische Untersuchungen verwenden ließen. Er befasste sich - ähnlich wie Karl Friedrich Küstner in Bonn - mit genauen Untersuchungen der terrestrischen Polbewegung und ihrer Periodik siehe Chandler-Periode. unknown
