Dedicated to Elizabeth, Countess of Northumberland, Percy's 'Reliques' is one of the most important collections of poetry in English. First published in 1765, ii not only encouraged 'with lasting effect the revival of interest in our older poetry' (DNB) but became a fertile source of content and style for the burgeoning Romantic movement. Michael Theodore Cherniavsky (1920-1992) was a renowned and long-serving (1948-1966) master of history at Christ's Hospital School and subsequently Professor of History at the University of Waterloo, Ontario from 1967 to 1983. Pour répondre à une demande de la duchesse de Nemours qui désirait connaître l’auteur, celui-ci composa un 'Portrait de Monsieur Le Pays’ qu’il dédia à cette princesse et qui figure ici en deuxième partie, sous faux-titre particulier (p. [361]-393). Critiqué pour la facilité de ses vers et la légèreté de son propos - Boileau le traitait de "bouffon plaisant" -, l’auteur répliquait spirituellement à ses détracteurs; parlant de lui-même, Le Pays dit: "Il est bon qu'il y ait de méchants auteurs pour donner de l'éclat aux illustres (...) et que je fasse des vers afin de donner matière aux Satyres de M. Boileau". Originaire de Nantes, René Le Pays avait été directeur général des gabelles du Dauphiné et de Provence et membre de l’Académie d’Arles. Mors fendillé. Bon exemplaire, bien relié à l'époque.
