His lithographs and early watercolors despite their small size demonstrate his extreme finesse and simplicity. Monnier's bright flat colors encircled by precise pen or pencil strokes bring his subjects to life with values and shadows indicated by more or less dense hatching. Some watercolors from this period appear almost as pen drawings enhanced with color due to the prominence of the pen work." These seven missing plates are highlighted below within the listing of all 40 plates.

Bound ca. 1828 by R. Hering & Muller volume 2 stamp-signed in gilt at foot of spine in half dark blue scored calf spines elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt marbled endpapers edges uncut. A wonderful and important copy.

Provenance: With two bookplates of M.A. Tessier Architecte: his engraved ex-libris with oak wreath vol. I verso of front free endpaper and the Tessier family armorial bookplate Semper Progrediens - "Ever Forward" on the front pastedowns of both volumes.

"The forty drawings by Henri Monnier lithographed with a pen on stone and colored with a brush are very rare complete. Seven of these lithographs are often missing they are: The Court Dress The Exile The Good Old Man The Marquise of Pretintaille The Flight of Love The Voyager The two Grenadiers." Carteret III p. 72.

The signed presentation translated reads: "Nothing more ridiculous for an author than to write something at the head of his works; but an admirable obstinacy obliges me here to obey. - Béranger". An ironic comment on the absurdity of authors inscribing their own books.

The Autograph Letter Signed "Rangot" 21 Aug. 1831 translated reads: "Dear and precious friend. the amiable good Béranger will do all you wish and has promised to honor me with a visit or two. I hope that the bonds of friendship will soon bring me the happiness of seeing you. Your poor very devoted but true friend Rangot. Paris 21 August 1831 Grande rue No. 81." With a postscript in Italian: "A thousand thousand respects to your amiable kind and good wife to whom I wish a child who in all things will resemble the father."

The signatory to the Als. "Rangot" leaves open the possibility of "Ragot." No individual of that exact name is recorded among Béranger's principal circle of publishers chansonniers or correspondents. It is therefore probable that "Rangot" was a minor literary or personal acquaintance acting as an intermediary arranging introductions to the poet at a time 1831 just after the July Revolution when Béranger's fame and political sensitivity made such mediation necessary. While one could tentatively connect the name with Louis-François Ragot 1782-1857 a Parisian man of letters active in minor journals of the period this identification remains unverified in standard bibliographies Vicaire Escoffier Carteret or collections of Béranger's correspondence.

The original Pencil Sketch of Béranger signed and captioned dated 16 August 1831 by Henri Monnier. Reads:
"Béranger the poet looking at the statue of Guillaume le Conquérant by the sculptor Archereau at the Champs-Élysées." With annotation: "I made this sketch of Béranger with all the possible politeness and convenience; it was impossible for me to take his face but from the back he gave me a good profile. I placed myself in a corner where I could see him well hidden for a poet who deserves to be observed must be carefully preserved."

"Monnier also illustrated Béranger's Chansons creating numerous series over time that reflect his admiration for Béranger's work. His lithographs and early watercolors despite their small size demonstrate his extreme finesse and simplicity. Monnier's bright flat colors encircled by precise pen or pencil strokes bring his subjects to life with values and shadows indicated by more or less dense hatching. 18393400Cuba and Caribean 1839. Quarter brown leather spine with light blue marbled paper with brown swirls over boards attractive blue endpapers. Complete Spanish and English translation of the entire book available upon request included with purchase. Very good not original binding likely late 19th century by family members in the provenance dedication. About half of the pages 17 have been reinforced on the lower quarter of the fore edge with archival tape. Light age fade mostly along the fore edge a few nominal water stains. Historical Midshipman's log book from duty off the coast of Cuba from 1837 - April 1839 just months before the revolt aboard the slave ship Amistad. Spain was under much pressure from England to put an end to slave trade ships and this ship was part of that fleet. The logbook of Midshipman Jose Maria de Beranger recording service aboard the Bergantin Colam under Capitan de Fragata Don Ramon Acha may well be the earliest surviving personal record of one of Spain's most prominent 19th century admirals and statesmen - written when he was a teenage midshipman on active anti-smuggling and anti-slave-trade patrol. The log eventually identifies all of the officers by name aboard the ship.

8.5" x 12" 106 pp. first and last page affixed to the verso of new end papers. Signed sixty 60 times by Beranger at the end of most daily entries signatures with artistic flourishes and curliques. Content is incredible indicative of a young midshipman on one of his first major voyages complete with daily details. Included are: Four meticulously drawn information wheels and tables; A "Cuban Brig / General State of Armament." This is a comprehensive ship's inventory and muster document of the armament provisions ballast financial summary. B Battle Plan - This is a combat stations wheel - essentially a circular battle bill assigning every crew member to a specific position on lthe ship and duty during combat. C Battle Stations Plan - a formal diagram showing every crew member's assigned position during combat. D A formal crew or personnel roster/pay table including rank number pay rations in the currency of Reales. Twenty-seven 27 hand drawn tables of sailing data which includes: longitude latitude weather wind direction water temperature astronomical data et. al. Last page of the journal is a daily accounting of the location of the ship. One interpretation of this book is that it is a log as part of his midshipman's training. While it certainly records events in which the ship was involved as well as weather course sail handling and events on board etc. these things were probably also recorded elsewhere in some more official record. Pages like the information wheel and description of armaments would be him setting into writing a day's lesson for future reference.

The written content of the log ranges from the mundane: fixing location signaling mail ships shipboard drills vivid weather descriptions marking the shoals onboard accidents. Ranging to extraordinary militarism; stopping unknown vessels at night firing muskets and grenades sending out of patrol boats with carronades.

Beranger was born in Cadiz on 12 February 1823 into a historic naval family his grandfather was Juan Ruiz de Apodaca Count of Venadito a Captain General of the Spanish Navy. He entered the Armada very young beginning to serve at sea at thirteen years old always aboard corvettes and dispatch vessels in subordinate roles until he obtained his first command in 1840 shortly after the trip of this chronicled voyage. He was admitted as a midshipman guardiamarina in 1837 having passed his entrance exams at just thirteen years of age. So in 1839 when this log was made he would have been only about 15-16 years old and in his very first years of active service - exactly when a midshipman would be keeping such a log. His lifetime credentials include: 31st Captain General of the Navy 7th Admiral Knight of the Military Order of Calatrava Minister of the Navy for six terms and Senator of the Kingdom.

This ship's log was kept when Beranger was just 15 years old two years after taking the Navy Board. The ship which corresponds to this log was the Brigitine Colon plying the North Coast of Cuba delivering mail looking for smugglers and slave runners. The log also names several times Midshipman Don Ramón Topete. The Topete family were closely connected to Beránger throughout his career - indeed it was Admiral Juan Bautista Topete who later handed Beránger his first ministerial appointment.

Provenance statement on p. 3: "By inheritance from my grandfather Don Jose Maria de Beranger y ruiz de Apodaca and by inheritance from my father Javier de Beranger y Carreras this book belongs to Elisa Beranger Fernandez de Salinas" "Dawn broke at sea with thick brownish hazy sky and horizon overcast to the west. At 2:30 the topgallants were furled and a reef taken in the topsails and two English warships were sighted coming from the East"

"Departure from Matanzas escorting to Havana the Portuguese Schooner OLIES"

"We continued at midday heading East SSE fresh wind and calm sea with all square sail jib and trysail heading East. At 12:30 the trysail and topgallants were furled and at 1 o'clock we continued forward brailing the mainsails in the tack and remaining in line with double-reefed topsails."

the mail packet under all portable sail - cannon and musket drill was carried out in large formation

"At 8:30 the 1st boat was put in the water at half speed the Midshipman went to reconnoitre various vessels - all without incident."

"A firing of cannon was heard from both sides. At ½ past the hour the cannon fire and the fog signal were made to the people on land. unknown

Woodcut vignettes to all three title-pages and several text-vignettes in the last work.

First editions of both parts of Beranger's "Chansons". Béranger's famous and influential song appeared in five parts in all beginning with the "Chansons morales et autres" in 1816. The two present collections constitute part two and three. The first part from 1816 is extremely scarce but this second part merely called "Chansons" is probably the most interesting and noteworthy off all the song-collections as well as being the most comprehensive. "Une édition plus complète parut en 1821 2 vol. in 18 Paris Firmin Didot. Cette édition résultant d´une souscription patronnée par le banquier Laffitte et A.-S. L- Bérard fut tirée à 10000 exemplaires; elle fut pursuivie et l´auteur quoique habilement défendu par M. Dupin l´aîné fut condamné á trois mois de prison et á 500 fr. d´amende." Brunet 1 pp. 781. The author was prosecuted and condemned to imprisonment for three monts because of the appearance of this edition. The two last parts "Chansons inédites" and "Chansons nouvelles et dernières" appeared in 1828 and 1833. These two collections contain some of the most important of Béranger's songs among these the influential Napoleonic ones. Lafont-Bompiani I:368. His obvoiusly satirical tone partly explains his great political influence at the time -he is a master of portraying the Bourbon government clericalism the old reactionary nobility and as a contrast the glorious souvenirs of Napoleon. "Voltairienne sentimentale mais frivole politique et satirique mais avec simplicité évitant toute complication de doctrine et toute morale tragique la poésie de Béranger est la représentation typique de cette première partie du XIXe siècle où la société est encore imbue des moeurs et des idées du XVIIIe et où le romantisme a peine à effacer complètement les formes littéraires et l'esprit de l'ancien régime." 182183789Paris: Chez Les Marchands de nouveautés 1821. Fine. Chez Les Marchands de nouveautés Paris 1821 - 1825 9.50 x 15.80 cm 2 volumes reliés First edition of these 3 works bound in 2 volumes. Following the Trial of messieurs de Béranger and Baudouin 14 manuscript songs retained by the prosecutor general against Béranger and censored. One understands the interest of this copy since the song collection was sold out or seized. Contemporary full straight-grained green morocco binding. Luxury binding from a major atelier but unsigned. Smooth spine decorated with a blind stamp with floral semé within a double gilt fillet frame. Boards decorated with multiple blind frames doubled with gilt fillets. Gilt edges. Triple gilt interior fillet. Spines uniformly faded. Small dark areas on the boards of one volume. Traces of rubbing. Scattered pale yellow foxing. Very handsome copies. Two days after the publication of the author's song collection published at his own expense the king's prosecutor for the Seine department filed a complaint against the chansonnier and ordered the seizure of the work the police only managed to seize 500 copies since 10000 had sold in a few days. He faced four charges: offense to morals attack on religious morality offense against the person of the king and incitement to wear a rallying sign unauthorized by the king the tricolor flag. He was condemned to a minimal sentence of three months in prison and a 500 F fine essentially for his attacks against the Capuchins and missionaries. Meanwhile his lawyer Dupin provoked a second trial by publishing his plea accompanied by the text of the incriminated songs as procedural documents. Béranger was a convinced republican and his songs became increasingly virulent under Louis XVIII. After the episode of his trial where all of Paris rushed to attend he became under Charles X an important figure of the liberal camp. An engaged author and today forgotten the chansonnier Béranger enjoyed immense celebrity but posterity has identified him with the acerbic criticisms of Flaubert and Baudelaire as a minor and bourgeois author unjustly revered. The history of his trial well before those of Baudelaire and Flaubert reveals the greater complexity of the author and stages the history of censorship under the Restoration.
