Folio approximately 29cm x 48 cm pp lxvi 316 iv all edges gilt with some foxing on the earlier and later few pages errata slip pasted to verso of the contents pages with 123 mounted specimens in good condition and 35 mounted groups of seeds half morocco and marbled boards a little rubbed and scuffed a darker stain towards the base of the spine marbled endpapers with the armorial bookplate of Henry Collins. The specimens are frequently described as all grass though this is incorrect - approximately nine of them are leguminous plants. Many of them are delicately heightened in watercolour. This copy does not have the folding plan and very few copies do. RARE. A very heavy book weighing nearly 8.5 kilos - extra postage costs will need to be added. A paper in 'Science' 25/01/2002 by Andy Hector and Rowan Hooper has called this book which influenced Charles Darwin "arguably the first ecological experiment". Darwin in his 'Origin of the Species' refers to an experiment investigating the biology of grassland plants that showed how a greater diversity of grasses planted in experimental plots was responsible for greater production of plant matter but Darwin left no clues as to where or when this experiment was done. Modern photobiology has its roots in chromotherapy and Dr. Babbitt was instrumental in bringing light and color into the scientific verifiable realm. In 1883. he also organized the New York College of Magnetics later named the College of Fine Forces which offered courses in chromotherapy magnetic therapy and psycho-emotional therapy. Dr. Babbitt developed his theories of color diagnosis and therapy and the electromagnetic spectrum and magnetism. This area of study chromotherapy preoccupied him for the remainder of his life. Wrappers somewhat toned small chip at each corner short vertical closed tear and some discoloration to front wrapper. Soft vertical crease throughout. Internally clean. An informative pair of rare and early reports from the Mexican Telephone Company a subsidiary of American Bell Telephone Company that sought to establish a national telephone network across Mexico during the 1880s. The Mexican Telephone Company began operations in 1882 using equipment from Western Electric and other supplies harvested from local Mexican markets specifically Mexican trees for telephone poles. At first the company met with success but over the course of the next two decades the company's work was eroded by a combination of increasing competition unsound workmanship the volatility of the Mexican financial markets and the restructuring and merging of telephone companies around the turn of the century. By 1905 the Mexican Telephone Company was sold or transferred to the Boston Telephone Company. Renamed the Mexican Telephone and Telegraph Company the branch continued to operate in Mexico contributing to the construction of an underground cable network.<br /> <br /> The present pamphlets provide interesting insight into the early years of the company's operations in Mexico. The first pamphlet opens with a letter to stockholders from J.D. Sargent the company's president. Sargent informs the investors of recent mismanagement of funds by the company's treasurer with which the company is dealing. He also reports on the company's takeover of the Puebla Telephone and Telegraph Company the infringement of the company's territorial rights by rival companies the hopeful outlook for completion of a railroad to Guadalajara which will likely result in "a decided improvement in business there for the future" and other news vital to the company's operations in Mexico. The following four pages are comprised of a detailed financial report to Sargent and the company directors by the general manager of the company M.L. Guiraud. Rounding out the first work is a two-page Treasurer's Report by the Treasurer pro tem. A.E. Denison.<br /> <br /> The later report indicates some volatility in the company's ranks as the opening letter from the president of the company is delivered by a new president Robert Colgate. Early in his letter Colgate mentions that he has been head of the company for two years and was part of a new regime put in place to curtail expenses liquidate outstanding obligations and "settle all outstanding claims with the view of putting the Company on a strong financial basis." Much of the remainder of Colgate's letter addresses lawsuits claims and other business which have now brought the health of the company to a "very satisfactory condition." The remainder of this annual report is a Treasurer's Report from yet another new treasurer W. French Smith. <br /> <br /> OCLC reports just a single copy of the later report at the University of Michigan. There are no holdings reported for the earlier report from 1887. External description: corners and spine tips rounded and bumped with minor fraying at the extremities of the corners. Some bumping as well to the board edges where they extend beyond the textblock. Rubbed lightened spot to the center of the spine column and darkening ot the top of the boards and the top edge of the textblock. Interior description: Front pastedown with two erasure spots - brown papers lightened and scuffed from the erasure. Front hinge is split with paper exposing the binding web - still relatively solid. The rear hinge is starting but not as advanced as the front. Darkening to the edges of the back of the free endpapers from the dark brown endpaper coloring coming through. Some light soil at the half-title. Frontispiece plates graphs and maps intact including two large folding maps bound in at rear and an extending graph in the supplements. One of the folded maps has a long tear at the binding edge. Binding feels solid and sturdy although cupping the spine will always be recommended with a book of this size and weight. Advert for the European publisher's catalog affixed to the rear pastedown. The pages are bright and clean majorly free of the foxing that generally plagues books of this time period. A well-kept copy inspite of the wear at the hinges and board edges. 637 pp. <br/><br/> W.H. Allen & Co. hardcover

In the paper Deville describes how to create the first crystalline silicon and he perfects the electrolytic process for obtaining metallic aluminium from sodium aluminium chloride."Deville’s methods made both metals readily available and drastically reduced their cost but he himself did not take much part in their later industrial development. He used the sodium obtained by his method for the preparation of such elements as silicon boron and titanium.
