Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau regretting that he and his wife are unable to accept Pond's invitation to attend actress Dorothy Sands' show.<p>Martin Egan 1872-1938 was an American journalist who wrote for newspapers and magazines in America and Canada and for the Associated Press in New York London Tokyo Peking and Manila. He was a correspondent during the Spanish-American War the Philippine Insurrection the Boxer Uprising and the Russo-Japanese War. He edited the Manila Times from 1908 to 1913. He was personal assistant to H. P. Davison Chairman of the American Red Cross War Council in 1917 and an aide to General Pershing in 1918. Very good. <p>Max Lerner regrets that he is unable to accept an invitation to speak in Harold Rugg's lecture series: "I got myself tied to a series of radio and lecture commitments in addition to my PM work and on top of it all I am trying to finish up my book on American civilization" "America as a Civilization: Life and Thought in the United States Today". After congratulating Rugg on his recent marriage he writes that he hadn't known about Rugg's new book. "PM" only publishes two book reviews a week but he will ask them to look into it with special care.<p>Max Lerner 1902-1992 was an American journalist and educator known for his controversial syndicated column in the New York Post. The column which debuted in 1949 earned him a place on Nixon's enemies list. "America as a Civilization" which doesn't get published until 1957 was his most influential book.<p>One of the most significant educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. Together with 2 pages of Harold Rugg's scribbled ink notes on possible speakers for his lecture series. The letter is in very good condition. <p>Max Lerner after regretting that he is unable to accept an invitation to speak in Harold Rugg's lecture series writes: "By the way have I told you how much I enjoyed your book I liked your discussion of Veblen so well that I put it into the bibliography of my Portable Veblen.".<p>Max Lerner 1902-1992 was an American journalist and educator known for his controversial syndicated column in the New York Post. 196296422Manilla Philippines May 25 1962. 1962. Good. - Over 140 words typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "Philippines Free Press Inc." stationery. In a letter addressed to his friend "Joan" from on-board the ship "President Cleveland" Theo F. Rogers informs her that he is "half way" to his destination to visit his "folks" in the U.S. "and also if possible my friends like you." He goes on to list addresses where he could be reached when in the U.S. that of the Hotel St. George in Brooklyn and the First National City Bank of New York. Signed "F. Theo Rogers". The letter us creased with some chipping along the left edge and bottom left corner. Good. <p>Founded in 1908 by Jude Kinkaid with Pat Gallagher the Philippines Free Press was taken over soon afterwards by Manilla Times editor R. McCulloch Dick whose vignette portrait adorns the stationery's letterhead. Following the Philippines liberation from Japan at the end of the Second World War the paper returned with vigor and came to be regarded as one of the most influential voices of the country. With half it's writers consisting of readers and subscriber to the paper the Free Press tackled every significant event and exposed graft and abuse in public office. Indeed the paper was frequently charged with libel by those whose actions it exposed in its columns. The paper's ownership passed on to F. Theo Rogers following R. McCulloch Dick's passing in 1960.<p>In 1898 the young American F. Theo Rogers landed in Manilla as a 16-year old soldier in the Spanish-American War. With brief absences he stayed on for most of his life. One of the first Americans scooped up by the Japanese when they occupied the island in the early days of World War 2 Rogers was imprisoned and tortured in the dungeons of Fort Santiago for 3 months before being sent to the Santo Tomas internment camp. His health having deteriorated Rogers was sent to the Philippine General Hospital from which he was rescued when American forces moved in to take the city. Manilla, Philippines, May 25, 1962. unknown

Very good. <p>Schiff writes to Jean Dalrymple thanking her for sending a copy of her new book "Careers and Opportunities in the Theatre" and hoping it becomes a best seller.<p>Dorothy Schiff 1903-1989 was an owner and then the leftist publisher of the New York Post for nearly forty years. She was a granddaughter of financier Jacob Schiff. She was interested in social services and reform and was involved in several welfare groups. Schiff sold the Post to Rupert Murdoch in 1976. It was believed she was pessimistic about the future of New York afternoon papers and she was also concerned about the effect of owning the paper on the value of her estate. Together with 2 unsigned carbon copies of letters from Harold Rugg. Good. <p>Seldes writes to Harold Rugg about travel arrangements for a talk he is to give at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City: "The 3:30 p m train also has a bus service and I am sure the ordeal will be over by then." The first carbon copy is a letter from Rugg saying he is delighted that Seldes can meet with their luncheon group. "If you prefer to write a brief summary of the points you are making in your book on Europe in order to provoke questions from the group that will be fine." He goes on to ask about travel arrangements to which Seldes' letter is a reply. The second carbon copy is of Rugg's confirmation of the arrangements.<p>George Seldes 1890-1995 was an American investigative journalist foreign correspondent editor author and media critic. He is best known for publishing the newsletter "In Fact" from 1940 to 1950. Seldes influenced and was greatly admired by a whole generation of journalists and activists such as Washington Post columnist Colman McCarthy Nat Hentoff and Ralph Nader.<p>One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. Very good.</p><p>The 1976 Presidential election pitted Gerogia Governor Jimmy Carter against incumbent Gerald Ford.</p><p>The American broadcast journalist Barbara Walters 1929-2022 was known for her interviewing skills and popularity with viewers. She hosted numerous shows including the ABC Evening News 20/20 and The View.</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. The journalist and war correspondent Edwin Wildman writes to the American impressario and lecture manager James B. Pond recommending John E. Kellerd "Do you suppose you could use Mr. John E. Kellerd one of the leading exponents of Shakespearian Drama He is a man of character and and ability and is a good public speaker on this topic and upon the American stage ideals etc." He goes on to state that should Pond be interested he'd be "glad to send him over to call on you." Signed in full "Edwin Wildman". Folded vertically and horizontally for mailing the edges of the letter are chipped with a few short tears and pieces out from the right edge. Good.</p><p>The American journalist and diplomat Edwin Wildman 1867-1932 worked as a writer and war correspondent for Leslie's Weekly. He served as Vice and deputy consul general at Hong Kong special war correspondent to the Philippines and for the Hearst papers as Chief Asiatic and special commissioner with allied troops in the war with China from 1900-1901. He later served as president and editor of The Forum Magazine.</p><p>In the role of Hamlet the Shakespearian actor John E. Kellerd 1862-1929 broke the then existing record by a series of 102 consecutive performances in 1912-13.</p><p>The American lecture manager James Burton Pond 1889-1961 was the head of the Pond Lecture Bureau in New York City.
