174265Devon: Beau Geste Press 1973. The "wreckers of Western civilization" First edition one of 200 copies only. Openly confrontational and subversive COUM was an art and performance collective from the UK spearheaded by Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti who went on to found the pioneering industrial band Throbbing Gristle. COUM were responsible for one of the most controversial exhibitions in British art history: Prostitution held at the ICA in 1976. The exhibition consisted of explicit sexual photographs used sanitary products bottles of blood and rusty knives. It scandalized the British press and prompted the Tory MP Nicholas Fairbairn to call COUM the "wreckers of Western civilization". Copyright Breeches began in April 1973 when P-Orridge sent David Mayor of the Beau Geste Press a parcel containing three "copyrighted" photographs of Tutti. COUM were fascinated by the concept of copyright and its implications for artists: Tutti made P-Orridge a pair of flared trousers covered in a patchwork of stencilled copyright symbols the original "Copyright Breeches" and P-Orridge even submitted a bid to the Arts Council to copyright Tutti in an unrealized work they intended to call "Copyright Queen". Copyright Breeches consists of purple-tinted photographs of objects places and people all containing the copyright symbol. "The truly megalomaniacal scale with which P-Orridge carried out their appropriation and copyrighting parodied career artists who treated their artworks as commodities as things that could be bought and sold just like other products" Ford. 138850N.p.: N.p. 1975. Original poster for a performance by COUM Transmissions held on February 18 1975 at the Stedelijk Academy in Ghent Belgium. The third in a series of five performances in the "Omissions" series the previous two taking place that same month in Belgium and the final two in May and June in Germany. Scarce with OCLC locating just a single copy. <br /> <br /> The brainchild of Genesis P-Orridge COUM Transmissions was an influential and controversial performance art group. Using similar techniques as and occasionally working with experimental artists William Burroughs Brion Gysin and the FLUXUS collective the group created confrontational exhibitions and happenings frequently utilizing explicit nudity bodily fluids and other taboo material. The "Omissions" performances were very much in line with this aesthetic with tour organizer Jean Paul van Bendegem describing them as "an exploration in the unusual of existing art-disciplines and a research in between these disciplines." <br /> <br /> 13.25 x 23 inches. Minimal soiling to the front page; generally clean throughout; three small holes in the inner margin from the original stitching; brief pencil note on the top of the front page; generally a nice copy. <br /> <br /> An interesting document in which President Washington transmits to congress a number of documents from South Carolina suggesting Edmond Genet recruited Americans to side with and fight for France in the present European conflict. Minister Genet answers these accusations in a letter to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson French and English translation are present assuring him that he is not recruiting "in the territory of the United States" but that he is encouraging "those of your fellow-citizen who should feel themselves animated with a desire of serving the best of causes I have granted them to several brave republicans of South-Carolina whose intention appeared to me to be to expatriate themselves and to go among the independent Indians tribes ancient friends and allies of France in order to retaliate if they could in concert with us on the Spaniards and English" p.11. Fine. <p>The first edition of the musician and performance artist's irreverent account of being charged with posting indecent postcards compiled from facsimiles of original documents and finished with a limitation page mocking the conventions of the fine press book. P-Orridge was a countercultural icon who rose to prominence in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the British industrial band Throbbing Gristle and as the co-founder of the avant-garde artistic and musical troupe COUM Transmissions. P-Orridge an artist and performer infamous for their confrontational work was prosecuted by the General Post Office for indecency after sending several sexually explicit postcards through the mail. The subsequent trial is immortalized in this publication. The postcards decorated with pornographic collages and erotic scripts - including collages of Queen Elizabeth II - were flagged by a Post Office operative sparking an important obscenity case in the history of the mail art movement. This publication charts the case by reproducing its associated ephemera including summons police statements legal documents newspaper articles correspondence between P-Orridge and their friends and supporters and the offending postcards themselves. William Burroughs a friend and advocate for P-Orridge suggested his own lawyer John G. K. Wood as an expert in obscenity law; letters between the trio are reproduced here. Despite public statements made in their defence by Burroughs the artist Bridget Riley and the director of the Tate Norman Reid P-Orridge was found guilty on five counts of sending by post an article which "has on the packet or cover thereof any works marks or designs which are grossly offensive or of an indecent or obscene character". The first 25 copies of this edition included invitations to the trial a signed reprint of the postcards stamps and an original collage by P-Orridge; it was later reissued by Primary Information in 2013.
