A clean, unmarked book with a tight binding. 216 pages. 8 1/8" w x 11 1/4" h. A bit musty smelling. Small tears, edge wear, and peeling laminate on price-clipped dust jacket. 265 color photographs and diagrams. Wonderful 1950's ultra-modern graphics in bright colors. "This remarkable book tells the activities of scientists working today in seven major fields: geology, astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. It is not a survey of the history and achievements of science, but rather an exciting look-over-the-shoulder at the men, in laboratories and in the field, who are making tomorrow's world."

388 pages including bibliography and index. A unique technical handbook, bringing together topics that are generally not available to the non-specialist, bridging the gulf between novice and advanced astrophotographer. Includes detailed discussion of topics usually ignored in a general survey, such as photographic optics, instrument design, techniques at the telescope, films and developers, advanced darkroom methods, sensitometry and film hypersensitization. Emphasis is placed upon the understanding of basic photographic principles and on professional laboratory methods, encouraging readers to conduct their own experiments and make contributions to the science of photography. Chapters include: A Brief History of Astronomical Photography; Instrumentation; Techniques at the Telescope; Theoretical Points of Interest; Sensitometry; Black-and-White Photography; Color Photography; Introductory Darkroom Techniques; Advanced Darkroom Techniques; Hypersensitizing Techniques; Deep-Sky Astrophotography; High-Resolution Photography (including a selection of fine astronomical photography); Selected Topics; plus appendices. Moderate quantity of library markings. Front free endpaper removed. Only moderate wear. A solid copy with dust jacket in protective clear mylar cover. Book
1st edition. Small 8vo. original green publisher's cloth with gilt lettered spine. xii, 110, [2 ads.] pages. Includes frontis & 1 plate. A contemporary response to the theories of Lowell on the likelihood of life on Mars and theories about supposed canals on its surface. Written in refutation to Percival Lowell's Mars and Its Canals (1906), this work argues that life, as we know it, cannot exist elsewhere in the universe. Wallace (1823-1913) was a contemporary of Charles Darwin who independently came up with the idea of 'Natural Selection.' Charles H. Smith wrote about this work, "For many years one of Wallace's least remembered books, Is Mars Habitable? is increasingly being recognized as one of the first examples of the proper application of the scientific method to the study of extraterrestrial atmospheres and geography--that is, as one of the pioneer works in the field of exobiology." Offset darkening to blank front endpaper (from a laid in paper), otherwise gorgeous with very litle wear, just the faintest shelf wear at the corners. A beautiful copy of this important work, Very Good+ Condition. (MX-38-3)
