Nei rimanenti dieci capitoli sono presentate le attuali conoscenze sulla struttura ed evoluzione stellare, sulle galassie e la distribuzione della materia alle grandi scale e sulla cosmologia, fino al modello del big-bang. Il testo rappresenta il risultato dell'esperienza di insegnamento dell'autore in corsi di Fondamenti di astrofisica, Astrofisica dei plasmi, Astrofisica teorica, Radioastronomia e Laboratorio di astrofisica che ha tenuto a Torino, la SISSA di Trieste e la University of Chicago.

br. L'orizzonte cosmico è, secondo la teoria del Big Bang, il fronte più avanzato dell'espansione dell'energia nell'universo. Le conoscenze ad oggi disponibili, derivate da osservazioni e analisi scientifica, postulano un universo finito ed in espansione; l'energia e la materia si espandono propagandosi in tutte le direzioni. Come esempio si pensi ad un palloncino che viene gonfiato: l'orizzonte sarà, in questo caso, la superficie del palloncino, che aumenta con il tempo. Allo stesso modo, l'orizzonte cosmico non è statico ma è in continua espansione e può essere immaginato come la superficie di una sfera. Questa espansione sembra essere sempre più veloce, accelerata, come dimostrato dalle osservazioni del red shift, che dimostrerebbe appunto il continuo aumento della velocità di espansione tra i corpi celesti, a causa del fatto che questa radiazione appare più spostata verso il rosso quanto più la galassia è lontana da noi.
br. La storia dell'uomo è l'insieme delle vicende umane all'interno della Storia della Terra. Essendo l'uomo il frutto di un processo evolutivo, l'inizio della storia dell'uomo può essere fatto risalire a diversi stadi di questo sviluppo: la si può intendere dalla comparsa del primo manufatto tecnologico australopithecino, a partire dalla comparsa del genere Homo, oppure a partire dalla comparsa di Homo sapiens, il cosiddetto "uomo moderno", circa 200.000 anni fa. Con tale definizione si può preferire indicare la storia dell'uomo moderno, dotato di caratteri anatomici identici all'uomo odierno e di una cultura artistica e spirituale, ma nella periodizzazione tradizionale il primo dei periodi della storia umana è generalmente indicato nella Preistoria, 2,5 -2,6 milioni di anni fa, e quindi include diverse specie ominidi.
br. Le dimensioni dell'Universo è stato uno dei temi di ricerca più importanti della cosmologia degli ultimi decenni. Ma si potrebbe anche ribaltare la questione: quanto noi siamo piccoli al suo interno? Sebbene la scienza attuale sia riuscita a farsi un'idea "numerica" della vastità del cosmo, la nostra mente fatica a comprendere dimensioni che vanno nell'ordine dei milioni e dei miliardi. In prospettiva, le dimensioni del nostro pianeta nell'universo corrispondono ad una piccola goccia in un trilione di secchi.
