This is a beautiful illustrated book: The emphasis is on the detailed miniatures reproduced here in full-page color plates. Interior clean and tight without marks. Outer boards appear to be aged manuscript on surface; with decorated banners and scroll work with blue letters on spine. Two orange ribbons are missing. There is one bumped corner and 1/2" cracks are starting on head and tail of spine. A marvelous collection of illustrations from the Middle Ages. Gaston Maillet and Co unknown books

"The End of the World." First edition. While not the first science fiction novel concerned with the extinction of the human race Flammarion's novel was perhaps the first to treat the matter so scientifically as it relates the consequences of a carbonic-oxide comet colliding with the Earth in the 25th century. A disastrously unsuccessful adaptation of the novel was filmed by Abel Glance in 1931. The second part chapter III opens with a marvelous vignette of a flying airship with vanes for wings propellers and the two occupants are lock-lipped! A photo-engraving signed by Helle of the Sun appears on p. 121: "Deja en certaines annees le Soleil se couvre de taches immenses." There is also an engraving to show the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 p. 193. Flammarion penned these lines translated herein within this book "In the future when the end of things will arrive on this earth the event will then pass completely unperceived in the universe.
