In-8° piccolo (14.5x10 cm), legatura in piena pergamena muta coeva con nervetti passanti alle cuffie, tagli maculati. Pp 141, (1), (2) bianche, (8), doppio frontespizio il secondo con mappamondo, 3 figure nel testo, 11 mappe (di cui 8 a doppia pagina), 4 capolèttere animati, il tutto inciso in xilografia. Segnatura: [A-I8, *8]: le carte non numerate montate in fine invece che al principio. Nota di acquisto settecentesca al recto della sguardia mobile anteriore. Minimi segni del tempo alla legatura e minimi difetti alle prime 10 pagine un poco stanche, peraltro interno fresco seppur lievemente rifilato in testa. Più che buon esemplare genuino. Affascinante edizione di uno dei testi più fortunati di Giuseppe Rosaccio (Pordenone, 1530-Venezia, 1621 ca.), stimato cartografo attivo a Venezia, fu autore di svariati atlanti, carte e planisferi, nonché di opere astronomiche, astrologiche e geografiche assai divulgate nella seconda metà del XVI secolo: Il Microcosmo, Mondo elementare e celeste, Discorso sulla nobiltà ed eccellenza delle Terra. A lui si deve anche la cura di un'edizione della "Geografia" di Tolomeo. La presente opera se da un lato si presenta come una classica enciclopedia umanistica uniformante, quindi, in base alla visione del mondo tardocinquecentesa, temi molto vari spazianti dall' astronomia, alla filosofia della natura, alla geologia fino alla religione, dall'altro tuttavia fornisce notizie precise sia testuali che grafiche su aspetti geografici e topografici basati su studi ma anche su ricerche sul campo (principalmente sull' Italia e l' Europa). Si ricordano ad esempio notizie su vari aspetti dell' Appennino tosco-emiliano (Porretta, San Donino); Sicilia e Sardegna; paesi scandinavi; Isole dei mari del Nord (Orcadi, Ebridi, Shetland); etc. Prsenti anche notizie climatiche e sulle comete Tutti i disegni sono dell'autore Dedicatoria dello stampatore al nobile veneziano Andrea Bragadino Cfr. Tre volumi in 4° grande, legati in mezza pelle con unghie, titoli al dorso ornato con decorazioni in oro ai piccoli ferri (dorso del terzo volume, restaurato senza decorazioni), sguardie, occhielli, al primo tomo tavola in rame col ritratto del Re Joao VI, frontespizi, XXIV, 448, VII, 474, VII, 423 pp. Amplissimo trattato in portoghese. Molte ed interessanti le notizie e le annotazioni. Lievi e sporadiche fioriture della carta. In più che buono stato. Raro.

Flanking the title are personifications of the four continents; Europe dominant the others rendered in stylised exoticism reflecting a Eurocentric worldview.
