2410122 June 1926; on his letterhead as 'Directeur' of 'Dotation Carnegie pour la Paix Internationale' Paris. Butler had been Taft’s running mate in the 1912 United States presidential election. Such was his standing in the US that The New York Times printed his Christmas greeting to the nation every year. He shared the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize with Jane Addams. The present item is not untainted by the pompous circumloctions what one critic described as Butler’s ‘interminable miasmas of guff’. 2pp 4to. On aged and creased paper with slight damage to extremities but with text completely intact. Signed ‘Nicholas Murray Butler’. He received Dickinson’s letter just as he was ‘leaving for Berlin on matters of common interest to us all’. From there he will head to London where he will spend two July weeks ‘at the Berkeley Hotel in Piccadilly which is my usual stopping place’. He continues: ‘As you know I am greatly interested in the work of the World Alliance and have recently discussed its undertakings and needs with some of our friends in America.’ He cannot see any support for the WA ‘in the immediate future’ other than through ‘some allotment from the Church Peace Union’. He explains in some detail how the ‘funds of the Carnegie Endowment’ are ‘entirely obligated in carrying forward work already in progress’: ‘Our Comité d’Administration in Europe has at his disposal a very limited allotment and that the Comité is using to what it regards as the best advantage in the work that has been organised under his direction.’ Note from Swarthmore site: "The Alliance was created in August 1914 at a conference in Constance Germany as an international organization that would work primarily to help Christian churches in its member countries influence their people and governments for peace. Its stated purpose was "to organize the religious forces of the world so that the weight of all churches and Christians can be brought to bear upon the relations of governments and peoples to the end that the spirit of peace and goodwill may prevail and that there may be substituted arbitration for war in the settlement of international disputes; friendship in place of suspicion and hate; co-operation instead of ruinous competition; and a spirit of service and sacrifice rather than that of greed and gain in all transactions between the nations." In consequence the Alliance worked on such issues as disarmament racial and religious minorities the League of Nations conscientious objection refugees peace education and arms control." 22 June 1926; on his letterhead as 'Directeur' of 'Dotation Carnegie pour la Paix Internationale', Paris. unknown

200765633Washington DC: National Science and Technology Council Committee on Science Interagency Working Groups on the Physics of the Universe 2007. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Very good. 6 47 pages plus front cover and back of rear cover. Includes illustrations. Some illustrations in color. Appendices A-E. Acronym List. No dust jacket as issued. The study of matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density--high energy density physics HEDP--is an emerging multidisciplinary field with potentially broad benefits to society. This report provides a Federal cross-agency strategic plan for scientific discovery in the broad HEDP field. This plan was developed by the Task Force on High Energy Density Physics under the auspices of the National Science and Technology Council's Interagency Working Group on the Physics of the University. The report articulates how high energy density physics fits into the portfolio of Federally funded missions and includes agency actions to be taken to further this area of study. The discussion of the Federal management of high energy density physics in the report was structured by organizing the research activities into four Federal Research Categories: Astrophysics High Energy Density Nuclear Physics High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas HEDLP and Ultrafast Ultraintense Laser Science. "HEDP is an area of science where theory and technology intersect to extend our conceptual framework of the universe" Dr. John H. Marburger III Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy says in the transmittal letter accompanying the report. "Discoveries in HEDP will enrich our understanding of important phenomena and stimulate future technology development." The Report of the Interagency Task Force on High Energy Density Physics was prepared for the Executive Office of the President Office of Science and Technology Policy by the interagency Task Force on High Energy Density Physics TFHEDP which was chartered by the Interagency Working Group on the Physics of the Universe IWGPOU under the Committee on Science of the National Science and Technology Council. The report addresses scientific opportunities in high energy density science previously identified in studies by the National Academies as well as reports from the scientific community. In particular the report describes actions which will be taken to encourage and nurture interactions among the diverse range of scientific disciplines and associated enabling technologies that encompass high energy density physics including the creation of an interagency website interdisciplinary meetings and future workshops. Extremes of heat and density - exceeding even the hostile conditions deep inside the sun - are seen in astronomical phenomena such as supernovae the violent death of stars. They are also encountered routinely in a laboratory setting in laser pulsed-power and accelerator experimental facilities used in research on fusion energy inertial confinement fusion nuclear stockpile stewardship and nuclear physics. The study of high energy density physics and related phenomena could therefore not only advance scientific understanding in fields such as astrophysics cosmology high energy physics and plasma science but also play an important role in accomplishing energy and national security mission goals.
