193316207New York: The Macaulay Company. Good in Very Good dj. 1933. 2nd printing. Hardcover. ex-rental library book Vierstahler Bros. on Walnut St. city unknown marked by only a single stamp on the ffep some soiling to fore-edge and bottom page edges binding a little weak but no cracks or splits light shelfwear; jacket is edgeworn with small tears and a teensy bit of paper loss at several corners a bit of smudging/creasing in front panel moderate soiling to rear panel. According to the jacket blurb of this book -- "so startling so new that is is certain to make literary history" -- both men AND women would find out more about the mysteries of the female body than they ever imagined. "The secret side of womanhood most of it dark even to the women themselves is revealed under the searching kindly inquiry of the consultation-chamber and the relentless probing insistence of the operating-room." Despite the singular title the book is actually structured around the experiences of two doctors who eventually come into conflict when one is accused of having facilitated an abortion. The setting is specified as Toronto which is a tipoff to the identity of the author: one Sol Allen a Canadian writer whose 1929 novel "They Have Bodies" published in the U.S. under the name "Barney Allen" has been cited as an almost unique early example of modernist Canadian fiction. And interestingly he also published two novels later as "Sol Barney Allen" -- apparently his true full name -- that would appear to cover the same ground: "Toronto Doctor" 1949 and "The Gynecologist" 1965. There's an extensive glossary of medical terms at the end of the book which permits the author to avoid the use of "repellent terms." And speaking of relentless probing by the way: could anything be much scarier than that jacket illustration . The Macaulay Company hardcover books

Despite the book's "completely frank medical vocabulary" and use of a "simple and easily understandable glossary" a contemporary review in the Journal of the American Medical Association summed up the work thus: "The book is neither fish nor fowl neither fiction nor science neither essay nor poetry. It is just an attempt to capitalize the public's morbid interest in obstetrics gynecology and abortions." The Macaulay Company hardcover books

196618769London: W H Allen 1966. A first edition first printing of 'The Warriors' by Sol Yurick published by W H Allen in 1966. A very good or better book with some spotting to the endpaper. No inscriptions and clean internally. In a very good unclipped dust wrapper with a small chip to the top of the front panel and one to the spine tip and a repair to a closed tear. Some light edgewear and a little soiling. Sol Yurick's 'The Warriors' is like a wacky urban safari through a neon-lit '70s New York City. Picture this: a gang named 'The Warriors' in stylish vests embarks on a wild adventure after being framed for a murder they didn't commit. As they journey through the city's diverse neighbourhoods they encounter a zany cast of rival gangs each with their own eccentric theme from baseball enthusiasts to roller-skating hooligans. It's a comical quest for survival where the Warriors must navigate subways avoid cops and engage in hilariously choreographed fights. This cult classic is like a groovy blend of action humour and '70s fashion that's as unforgettable as it is offbeat. W H Allen unknown

19461075American Association for the Advancement of Science 1946. 1st Edition. FIRST ADDITION OF "ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE PERIODIC TABLE SINCE MENDELEEV'S 19th century DESIGN" Seaborg Obituary Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The paper includes 9 illustrations two of which are periodic tables inclusive of Seaborg's addition.

American scientists Glenn Seaborg 1912-1999 developed the ‘actinide concept' "of heavy element electronic structure which predicted that the actinides - including the first eleven transuranium elements - would form a transition series analogous to the rare earth series of lanthanide elements" ibid. Seaborg proposed the actinide concept in 1945 and a year later described his discoveries and the actinide concept in a paper - this paper -- "The Transuranium Elements" Science 104 pp. 379-386 25 October 1946.

Seaborg's formulation of the concept of heavy element electronic structure showed how the transuranium elements fit into the periodic table. Seaborg noted that "My theory required a major realignment of the periodic table of the elements." His concept became the foundation for many significant discoveries in heavy element research. "In 1946 in this paper Seaborg discovered that a major change was needed in the periodic table. Several elements that had been regarded as belonging to a fourth transition metal series were separated out from the main body of the periodic table to form the lanthanide and actinide series. Uranium is among these elements and is no longer regarded as a transition metal" Scerri The Periodic Table 307

ALSO INCLUDED: Spiegelman and Kamen "propose a most interesting and highly significant concept of gene action. stating‘Genes continually produce at different rates partial replicas of themselves which enter the cytoplasm'" Lee Protomorphology 156. Sol Spiegelman was a pioneering molecular biologist whose discoveries accelerated the study of gene action and laid the foundations of recombinant DNA technology. CONDITION & DETAILS: Large 4to.
