The standard work on shipbuilding by a Dutch author - the leading nation in naval architecture in the early modern period. This seminal work contains detailed descriptions and illustrations as well as an account on the history of navigation and ship building since antiquity, discussing construction techniques, different types of ships, and naval architecture from across the world as observed by the author during his travels. - Nicolas Witsen (ca. 1640-1717) was mayor of Amsterdam 13 times between 1682 and 1706. In 1693 he became administrator of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In his free time he was a cartographer and maritime writer, as well as an expert on Russian affairs. - Binding somewhat rubbed; front hinges broken. Title-page waterstained; upper portion of the gutter waterstained in entire first half of the volume; occasional marginal tears, browning and light fingerstaining. Still a good working copy of the classic that in 1697 inspired Tsar Peter the Great to a four-month training period at the Dutch East India Company shipyards organised by Witsen. Small hardcover without jacket. Item slightly cocked. Boards faintly marked; spine head and foot bumped; leading corners bent and a little worn. Leading edges a little worn, with the rear dented. Page block tanned, with scuffmarks on head. Hinges weakened at several points through volume and at rear, pages at these points are intact but brittle and beginning to detach. Endpapers / pastedowns a little grubby and foxed. Fold - out diagram at front is foxed with a few stains and a nick on leading edge. Title page creased, foxed and grubby. Taped repair on p.3. Small tear on leading edge of p.5. Pages thereafter are a little aged, with instances of light foxing and a few stains, but the majority are well - preserved, and all text and figures remain clear. Samuel Carpenter, was born in 1765, at Lancaster County, PA. He was a farmer for many years. In 1807 he moved to Lancaster for the purpose of having better opportunities for the education of his children. Here he engaged for some years in the business of inn-keeping. Lancaster at the time being the seat of the State government, and a great resort for strangers from all parts of the State, he developed wealth and influential connections. He was appointed an Alderman, and not long thereafter was elected Mayor of the City of Lancaster, a position to which he was frequently reelected. 205mm. Original full leather binding, very worn. Neatly bound in before frontispiece is a double-page letter in facsimile from the Honourable Charles Grey acknowledging, on behalf of HRH Prince Albert, receipt of a copy of the book for the Royal Library. The letter repeats complimentary made by Queen Victoria in respect of the work. A printed slip transcribing the letter is bound in at end.
