Der hessische Technologe und Jurist K. C. v. Langsdorff (1757-1834) lehrte 1798-1804 Mathematik und Maschinenkunde in Erlangen, 1804-1806 in Wilna und 1806-27 in Heidelberg. 1804 wurde er in die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina aufgenommen und "hatte 1818-22 Anteil an der Entdeckung der badischen Salzquellen" (DBE). - Einband stärker berieben und an Ecken und Kanten bestoßen. Mit der physikotheologischen Arbeit "Allgemeine Betrachtungen über die Triebe der Tiere, hauptsächlich über ihre Kunst-Triebe" (1760) war Reimarus zum Mitbegründer der modernen Tierpsychologie und Ethologie geworden. Die unvollendeten und aus dem Nachlaß herausgegebenen "Angefangenen Betrachtungen" setzen diese Schrift zur Instinktlehre fort. - Ohne Bandzählung am Titel, jedoch der dritte Band von Schrämbls Ausgabe der "Allgemeinen Betrachtungen" (der entspr. Schlußvermerk am Textende unschön gelöscht mit Papierdurchrieb; das Folgeblatt (Register) leicht fleckig. - Einband berieben und fleckig; alter hs. Besitzvermerk am vorderen Innendeckel.

First edition. - A well-preserved copy of this important work on chronology, edited by the mathematician and artillery officer Georg von Vega, who mentions "H. A. C. v. K." as the author in the foreword. The book covers various issues of chronology, such as the division of time, dominical letters, epacts, golden numbers and the calculation of the same, as well as the origin and significance of eclipses and solstices. Furthermore, the author discusses various calendars, such as the Gregorian, the French, the Jewish and the Islamic ones, and provides numerous tables and examples for calculations. - Paper variously browned and brownstained. First edition of the first German monograph on gas lighting; preceded only by Lampadius's translation of Accum's "Practical Treatise on Gaslight". J. J. Prechtl (1778-1854) initiated the foundation of the Vienna Polytechnical Institute in 1815, the first educational institute of its kind in the German-speaking countries, and served as its first director. The institute became a decisive force in the industrialization of Austria. In the autumn of 1815, Prechtl and the engineering professor Johann Arzberger developed a lighting apparatus based on coal gas, thus becoming a pioneer of continental gas lighting. He introduced the system at his Polytechnical Institute in 1817. - The plates are lithographed by the trained engraver Ignaz Kühn, later to become director of the Vienna Lithographic Institute (cf. Schwarz, 43); in 1817, when Senefelder left Vienna, he became Friedrich Kunike's principal assistant (cf. Thieme/B. XXII, 58).
