Folio (225 x 370 mm). (4), 50, (2), 500 pp. With engraved title-page, additional title-page printed in red and black, and 48 engraved maps, plans and plates, all but 1 double-page (numb. I-XLV, pl. XXVIII and XXIX with A- & B-number, pl. 24 followed by 24*; 9 folding, some numbers in ms.). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with handwritten spine-title. First Dutch edition. The standard work on Japan which "was for more than a century the chief source of Western knowledge of the country" (DSB). The first historically and scientifically accurate description of Japan, this major work comprises the first biography of Kaempfer and an account of his journey, a history and description of Japan and its fauna, a description of Nagasaki and Deshima, a report on two embassies to Edo (now Tokyo) including descriptions of the cities visited on the way, and 6 appendices on tea, Japanese paper, acupuncture, moxa, ambergris, and Japan's seclusion policy. The illustrations depict ports and scenery, costumes, characters, temples, ceremonies, Japanese fauna and flora, ships and coins, as well as mythological figures like the Buddhist goddess Quanwon. Furthermore, the work comprises a large folding map of the Empire of Japan, folding city plans of Nagasaki and Edo, and seven regional maps showing Kaempfer's itinerary. - Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) was a professor from Lemgo, Germany, who joined the Dutch East India Company as a physician in 1685. After periods in India and Indonesia he travelled in 1690 to Japan to work as a doctor in Dejima (Deshima), the Dutch trading post and factory in Nagasaki and one of the few places where Western and Japanese people were allowed to interact. During his three-year term of duty, Kaempfer was twice allowed to journey to Edo (Tokyo) in the company of the head of the factory. After his return to Europe he wrote a number of works but did not publish them, leaving them in manuscript at his death. Sir Hans Sloane acquired these manuscripts, along with his drawings and herbarium, and arranged for their translation and publication. The first to appear was "The History of Japan" in 1727, here offered in Dutch translation. This work established Kaempfer's reputation as the 18th century authority on Japan and deeply influenced Japan's image in Europe. - Extremities slightly rubbed. Occasional minor browning; small tear to map of the Japanese Empire rebacked with paper. Small armorial blindstamp to flyleaf and title-page. Froriep - the son-in-law of and successor to the famous publisher Bertuch - had headed. A correspondent with Goethe, Robert Froriep also taught anatomic drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. "Obgleich er in den von ihm besonders cultivirten Wissenschaften, der beschreibenden und pathologischen Anatomie, keine hervorragenden Entdeckungen gemacht hat, hat er durch seine zahlreichen Unternehmungen [...] die Wissenschaft wesentlich gefördert und namentlich zur Popularisierung von kostspieligen ausländischen Abbildungswerken, die ohne ihn daselbst nur wenig bekannt geworden wären, wesentlich beigetragen" (Hirsch II, 455). - Slight waterstaining near end (mainly affecting the plate's lower margin). (6), 128 SS. Mit 2 gest. Tafeln. Halblederband der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückenschildchen. Buntpapiervorsätze. 8vo. Zweite Ausgabe des Gründungsdokuments der Anthropologie. J. F. Blumenbach (1752-1840) "is [today] chiefly remembered for his work 'On the Native Varieties of the Human Race', now considered as the foundation of the science of physical anthropology - the study of the origin and evolution of the races of men [...]. Blumenbach was able to develop the thesis that all living races are varieties of a single species, homo sapiens, and that their differences were small compared with those between man and the nearest animal; 'innumerable varieties of mankind run into each other by insensible degrees'. It is not surprising therefore that Blumenbach was opposed to the practice of slavery and the then current belief in the inherent savagery of the coloured races" (PMM). "Blumenbach was the founder of anthropology. In this, his dissertation, he classified mankind into four races, based on selected combinations of head shape, skin colour and hair form. In the second edition (1781) he found it necessary to expand this division into five races, but his famous terms 'Caucasian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, American, and Malayan' were not used until the third edition of 1795" (Garrison/M.). - Einband berieben; Ecken bestoßen; Rücken mit Fehlstellen. Fine English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English, Turkish and reprint of original vakfiyye in Ottoman Turkish with Arabic letters. [vi], [3], 58, 57, [3] p. A bilingual preface in Turkish and English by Ates; pp. 1-19 transcription; pp. 20-34 text in modern Turkish; pp. 35-58 translation into English; pp. [57] facsimile of original vakfiyye. This book is compiled and published to interest readers in the deed of trust concerning water supply to the city of Istanbul [Constantinople - Kostantiniyye] -known as Kagithane waters- made by Sultan Suleyman theMagnificent -the greatest philanthropist ever and a man peerless in magnanimity. There have been innumerable such water supply projects large and ssmall for which deeds of trust were penned -as part pf a collection or in an overall charity. But Sultan Suleiman was the first and the only person to found a work of charity for the sole purpose of supplying his capital with"... clean, pure, healthy and sweet fresh waters". Amongst host of other deeds of trust that allocate revenues for the maintenance, repair and restoration of water works, public fountains, Turkish baths etc. that of Sultan Suleiman's philanthropy, allocation ad infinitum of revenues of a sizeable township and five villages with most extensive lands, is unique. This man of greatest magnanimity laid down conditions to keep the water supply system in good working order. Parts of revenues and incomes from his other pious foundations were to be used should revenues from this township and five villages prove insufficient. A careful study of this book will display the most exalted consciousness of this truly great sovereign in matters related to man's destiny.
