The physicist A. H. Paulian (1722-1801) taught at the Jesuit college of Avignon, where his great dictionary of physics was first published in 1761. He had developed the word from his one-volume ‘Dictionnaire de physique portatif’ (1758). The plates depict geometric constructions and bodies, models of light refraction, astronomical models, etc. - Front covers slightly rubbed (traces of removed labels), otherwise a good, clean copy. Es war diese Ausgabe, die dem Werk Pawlows (1849-1936) ihre weltweite Bedeutung verschaffte. Zugleich die früheste Edition dem Sammler zugängliche Ausgabe (die russische Auflage von 1897 gilt als praktisch unauffindbar). - "Speichelbildung ist eine geläufige Erfahrung; sie kann auch ohne den Anblick oder Geruch von Speisen erzeugt werden. Bei einem Menschen kann sich diese Reaktion zum Beispiel dann einstellen, wenn er hört, wie im Nebenraum der Tisch zum Essen gedeckt wird, und beim Hund ist dieselbe Erscheinung zu verzeichnen, wenn er beispielsweise das Klappern seines Freßgeschirrs hört. In einer Reihe von Vorlesungen, die Pawlow in Petersburg hielt und die im Jahr darauf veröffentlicht wurden, befaßte er sich eingehend mit der Erforschung dieser Vorgänge und lieferte damit einen bedeutenden Beitrag zu unserem Wissen über die Physiologie der Verdauung. Im Verlauf dieser Vorlesungen beschrieb er den künstlichen Magen für Hunde, mit dem es ihm gelang, zum ersten Mal Magensäfte ohne Nahrungszufuhr zu erzeugen [...] Pawlows Ergebnisse bilden eine Ergänzung zu denen Freuds, und viele schreiben ihnen eine wesentlichere Bedeutung zu. Wie bei Freud, so haben wir es auch hier mit dem Werk eines einzigen Mannes und mit einem völlig neuen Weg zu tun. Biermer widmete sich ganz der inneren Medizin und machte zahlreiche Entdeckungen in der klinischen Mikroskopie (vgl. Garrison/Morton 3124). - Vorsatz mit kl. ovalen Loch (wohl von entferntem Stempel). Die Tafeln lith. von Emil Wilhelmi in Leipzig durch Adolf Sauer nach Zeichnungen Biermers. Der evangelische Theologe und bedeutende Naturwissenschaftler Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790) widmete sich "naturkundlichen Studien und legte eine Reihe von Sammlungen an. 1757 wurde S. The first exposition of Ehrlich's side-chain theory appeared in this paper" (Garrison/M.). Ehrlich's famous paper describes how diphtheria toxin and antitoxin interact and the method of their measurement. "Not only did he postulate that immunological specificity was due to a unique stereochemical relationship between the active sites on antigen and antibody, he introduced also the concepts of affinity and of functional domains on the antibody molecule. This work provided the taproot from which the field of immunochemistry later grew; he would be famous for this contribution alone. But Ehrlich also appended to this study a theory of the basis for antibody formation, an inclusion that assured the report a unique position in the history of immunology" (Silverstein, A History of Immunology, p. 65).
