1909List1921London 1909. Silver gelatin prints measuring 5 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Editorial marks to verso one marginal tear else about fine with fine contrast very good plus overall. Fine. Western shows particularly Buffalo Bill’s which ran in Earls Court for several years were highly influential in introducing the British public to American Indian culture often in highly fictionalized form. After the Buffalo Bill show ceased performing in London others followed including the The Golden West and American U.S.A. industries exhibition of 1909. Offered here are three photographs of American Indian children from the exhibition who were likely part of the show’s ‘Red Man Spectacle.†They are likely Oglala. The show featured a reenactment of an entirely fictitious event called the “Black Hawk Massacre in Colorado†and some veterans of Cody’s shows including Red Shirt Lone Bear and Painted Horse were among the performers. The three children pictured here are named Little Holy Flower Hold His Hand and Come in Camp. A note to a verso says the pictures were taken concurrently with the Franco-British Exposition which continued for several years in various iterations beginning in 1908. We find one variant image from this shoot otherwise no record of these images which may have been taken by the Brown Brothers firm or possibly ended up in their possession from another photographer. unknown

Rare indeed.

¶ Title leaf cites Biblical verse Matt. VI 28 29 30 which reads in part: "28 Why are you anxious about clothes Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. 29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 30 If God so clothes the grass of the field which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow will he not much more provide for you O you of little faith" Although no author nor compiler is given within the present offering corresponds to other similar such works attributed to German missionary and cabinet-maker Ferdinand Vester see references above who had moved to Jerusalem in 1853 to join the Swiss-German Mission. Accordingly the present work may have been the result of his collaboration with the efforts of the London Jews' Society's' "House of Industry" an Anglican missionary society located at Christ Church Jerusalem which offered vocational training to Jewish boys in various trades such as carpentry turnery shoemaking etc. The products produced by these boys would in-turn be sold to other missionaries or as religious souvenirs to passing tourists or those migrating to the West. Vester's son Frederick would carry on his father's business later marrying Bertha Spafford herself the daughter of the founder of the American Colony in Jerusalem Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. Album embossed “INDUSTRIA LANERA DEL URUGUAY S.A. / ILDU / MONTEVIDEO URUGUAYâ€. Photos with fine contrast two missing; slight wear to mounts and album; else Near Fine. Industria Lanera del Uruguay is a Montevideo-based wool manufacturing company that was founded in 1933. Offered here is a photo album likely from the late 1950s to mid-1960s showcasing ILDU’s high-tech factory—an introductory page from the album claims that ILDU had “a policy of yearly replacements†of equipment to keep “abreast of all technological improvementsâ€. The photos which are all captioned document the worsted wool manufacturing process from sorting and scouring to dyeing and weaving; the laboratories that test the product’s moisture level tensile strength and so on; and the luxurious “sample room†where gentlemen examine the finished product while relaxing in leather armchairs.

Textiles especially wool made up a large percent of the Uruguayan manufacturing sector before 1960. Though manufacturing was slow to start because of a small population and political instability in the country and because so much of the country’s open space was taken up with ranching there was a massive boom in wool manufacturing in particular between the 1930s and 1950s.1 ILDU was one of the largest worsted wool companies in the ‘30s and is still operational today.

Of interest to historians of South America’s manufacturing history.

1 Magdalena Bertino “La industria textil uruguaya 1900–1960†América Latina en la historia económica 31 June 2009: 99–126. unknown
1886List3133Baltimore Maryland: Jno. S. Bridges & Co. Printers 1886. Trifold booklet measuring 3 ½ x 6 ¼ inches folded with notebook and short almanac inside; two pages with notes. A booklet made for the Patapsco Guano Company of Baltimore Maryland printed in 1886. The exterior of the booklet features three attractive lithographs by A. Hoen & Co. with the lithograph on the back of the booklet showing Patapsco’s manufacturing plant at Fell’s Point. Inside is a miniature almanac with notebook pages two of which have been written on. Guano was invaluable as a source of nitrogen for fertilizer and gunpowder. Guano export was a pillar of economic development supporting a stable economy in Peru in the mid-19th century and driving American annexation of numerous islands in the Pacific and Caribbean under the Guano Islands Act of 1856. For its part the Patapsco Company was involved in a Supreme Court case in 1898 in which it contested the inspection charge of twenty-five cents per ton for fertilizers. Not too long after in the early 20th century a method for extracting nitrogen from air was discovered and guano’s importance declined. Jno. S. Bridges & Co., Printers unknown
