Bradford, americano, brevetto' una macchina (di cui compare un'illustrazione nel testo) costituita da una gabbia ottagonale in legno nella quale venivano messi i vestiti da lavare inserita a sua volta in una piu' grande, una sorta di mastello di legno, riempito con acqua e sapone. Una manovella azionata a mano faceva ruotare il meccanismo permettendo ai panni di lavarsi.
