186828395New York: West Point Foundry 1868. Very good condition. A receipt on West Point letterhead paper signed by S. Rumpf of the Foundry to A.W. Humphrey Treasurer of the Sterling Railway Co. acknowledging receipt of a draft for $100 with Sterling stamp. <br /> <br /> The Sterling Iron and Railway Company was situated in Ramapo Rockland County New York and operated under various names from 1736 until 1923. The West Point Foundry was an American iron working and machine shop located in Cold Spring New York. It's manufacture of Parrott Guns was instrumental in helping the North during the Civil War. It operated from 1818 to about 1911.<br /> <br /> 7 5/8 x 9 7/8" blue lined letterhead original folds manuscript round stamp mark by Sterling on 20 October 1868 4 binder holes at left. Mr. Livingston's signed copy of a pamphlet pertaining to Florida as a suitable "health resort" for Northern patients by Frederick Lente MD. Dr. Lente 1823 - 1883 was the primary surgeon at the West Point Foundry Cold Spring NY during the Civil War. He served at the Foundry from 1851 to 1870; later he was head of gynecology and children's health at the University of the City of New York and founder of the American Academy of medicine.<br /> <br /> Livingston was a member of a family of the Hudson River Valley which at one point owned some 900000 acres of land and about three dozen mansions in the area giving the area the nickname "Livingston Valley".<br /> <br /> 8vo 56pp errata slip bound in. Original quarter leather spine worn and dry corners worn joints a touch tender but sound and intact. Printed on one side only a few minor marginal tears from turning these double pages title a bit browned in spots otherwise unmarked internally. The typesetting and text is built around the history of printing using text from The Invention of Printing by Theodore Low de Vinne which Bruce's had printed in 1878 - a remarkable and charming conceit for a specimen book. Portrait frontis 352 XVIpp.<br /> <br /> Founded in 1813 by Scottish immigrant George Bruce Bruce's Type Foundry began issuing specimen books under George's son in 1865 culminating in the 1882 book. Ten supplements were issued from 1883-1894. Specimens of Printing Borders and Ornaments etc. Made at The Tokyo Tsukiji Type Foundry. 146 pp each with copperplate printed 'Types of Cuts' Large 8vo. 252 x 168 mm bound in original printed wrappers. In a new chitsu case. Tokyo: Nomura Sojuro. 1898. A fascinating apparently unrecorded Japanese type specimen book. The Tsukiji Type Foundry seem to have been active printing books in Western languages from 1891 to 1919. There is some wear and damage to the lower outer corner of the first few pages. However overall a clean and respectable copy of a rare and attractive book. unknown books
