With half-titles in each volume. 8vo handsomely bound in vellum over blue paper-covered boards with the publisher's original printed paper labels on the spines top edge gilt others untrimmed xvi 315; 332; 370 pp. A set in beautiful condition the text fresh and as pristine but for a bit of the typical mellowing or occasional age evidence. The bindings are sturdy and strong and show little wear or use a little bit of spotting from age to the bindings publisher's printed labels are fresh and very legible. Ownership signature of James Buchanan unobtrusively at top of the titlepage and stamp of the Bellfield Library on each title-page and occasionally at chapter openings no other markings within hard-to-see evidence of small circular shelf labels once being on the spine tops. FIRST EDITION OF A SCARCE AND EXCELLENT WORK THIS SET IN UNCOMMONLY FINE AND WELL-PRESERVED CONDITION and with all half-titles as is often not the case. Sir Walter Scott was considered to be the inventor of the historical novel and the success of his Waverley series was immediate and long lasting throughout the English speaking world.<br> Set shortly after the English Civil War WOODSTOCK was inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652 during the Commonwealth and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660. David Hume's HISTORY OF ENGLAND gave Scott most of the historical background.<br> As with all the Waverley novels prior to 1827 WOODSTOCK was published anonymously. 1899009612No Place: Juvenile Publishers 1899 Unpaginated. Pictorial boards accented in gilt cloth spine corners worn edges rubbed clean overall with a few signs of use internally. The publishers really tried to pack a lot into this one little book! We start out with an alphabet with two examples and brief verse for each letter then we go on to counting then days of the week then months and finish off with some natural history. Peppered throughout the book are Mother Goose rhymes. The book is illustrated in two-color plus line art printed with blue ink and there is a color frontis depicting Little Red Riding Hood. Light chipping to edges of wraps clean internally and very good. <br /> <br /> Rare booklet from one of the early pioneers of the Puget Sound Edward Jay Allen 1830-1915. Unusual for immigrants heading west Allen was college-educated and single. He settled near Olympia in 1852 after his overland journey from Pennsylvania. Interestingly Allen negotiated with the local Native Americans to pay for the land before he took up residence. He played an important role in early surveys and road building in the area before returning east in 1855.<br /> <br /> This story likely written for his children is told by a fater to his 7-year-old and begins "Once upon a time there was a Prince." An epic battle ensues between the Fairy Godmother and the Great White King to preserve the wildflowers the Prince loved so well. "If you build these Walls of Sand around the Prince's flowers the power of the Great White King shall be naught and the flowers may bloom on forever."<br /> <br /> OCLC cites a single holding at the University of Pittsburgh and we find no mention of this booklet elsewhere. <br /> <br /> .
