Molte delle moderne teorie matematiche hanno avuto la loro origine in problemi di meccanica e solo in seguito hanno assunto quella forma astratta ed assiomatica che ne rende così difficile lo studio. In questo libro l'apparato matematico della meccanica classica viene costruito sin dall'inizio, in modo tale che non si richiedono al lettore conoscenze preliminari, diverse da quelle che si ottengono nei corsi normali di analisi, di geometria e di algebra lineare. Per mezzo di tale apparato matematico vengono esaminate tutte le questioni fondamentali relative ai sistemi dinamici, compresa la teoria delle oscillazioni, la teoria del moto del corpo rigido e il formalismo hamiltoniano. L'autore ha cercato ovunque di mostrare l'aspetto geometrico e qualitativo dei fenomeni. In questo senso il libro è più vicino al corso di meccanica teorica per fisici teorici che ai corsi tradizionali di meccanica teorica usati dai matematici.

In these two papers the equation of the tangent plane at a point of a surface was first worked out in detail the equation had been known since Parent methods of descriptive geometry were used in determining the perpendicular common to two straight lines in space and the Pythagorean theorem was generalized to space the square of a plane area is equal to the sum of the squares of the projections of this area on mutually perpendicular planes.
