This is one of several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction. Several of the books including this one contain a presentation inscription to him. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. Quine in Church's Journal of Symbolic Logic Volume 4 Issue 2 1939 87-88. This volume was among several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. One page does have brief margin notes that appear to be in his hand. Full title: "Semantische Theorie der Programmsprachen Dissertation zur Erlangung des Grades eines Doktors der Naturwissenschaften der Mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Eberhard-Karls-Universität zu Tübingen." Schwenkel's faculty advisors for this dissertation were Karl Zeller and Hellmuth Kneser. Schwenkel went on to become a professor at the University of Hamburg where among other things he was involved in programming/design of chess computers. When Schwenkel published his REKURSIVE WORTFUNKTIONEN UBER UNENDLICHEN ALPHABETEN it was Alonzo Church who reviewed it in his JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC Volume 40 Issue 4 1975 621-622. This is one of several dozen books and periodicals from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Nella linguistica, le sue osservazioni sul fenomeno del "sostrato" furono riprese e sviluppate da G. I. Ascoli; notevoli, inoltre, le critiche mosse alle teorie delle migrazioni dei "popoli" indoeuropei, formulate dalla prima linguistica romantica (critiche confermate dall'ulteriore sviluppo della linguistica indoeuropea).

Per Werner Jaeger i commentari di Tommaso d'Aquino a quest'opera aristotelica sono in assoluto i migliori.
