187751868Oneida NY: Office of the American Socialist 1877. Second edition. Octavo 22cm. Printed pale green wrappers; 32pp. A fresh apparently uncirculated copy Near Fine.

A singular aspect of Noyes's Pefectionist philosophy as practiced by his followers at Oneida was the sanctification of the human sexual bond through the practice of "male continence" i.e. coitus reservatus or the withholding of the male orgasm during intercourse. The current pamphlet falls somewhat short of elucidating technique at least to the satisfaction of the uninitiated reader but does provide at some length Noyes's Biblical justifications and his defense of the practice. The first edition appeared in 1866 with the full title Male Continence: or Self-Control in Sexual Intercourse. That title having drawn the attention of Noyes's censors all of the sub-title was dropped from the Second Edition - save the semi-colon which remained a mysterious punctuational ghost or vain apostle; universal symbol of something more to come.

Full disclosure: we are in possession of a substantial remainder of the Second Edition. 185553636Peoria: printed by Benjamin Foster 1855. First edition 8vo pp. iv 5-72; some foxing on the early leaves else fine in original printed salmon wrappers. "Root was a former common-school teacher who moved to Peoria County from Ohio in the fall of 1830. He apparently became a farmer after moving to Illinois" Byrd. An eccentric populist attack against big banks and the American legal system from an aging Peoria county farmer who notes that for "more than fifty years I have seen that there was some thing radically wrong in the political and religious world . I exerted myself for more than half a century politically and religiously for the sole purpose of heading and stopping those evils but all to no effect. The public journals both religious and political would not publish my communications because they were Truth." He was apparently a member of the National Reform Association an organization bent on re-Christianizing American society. He puts forth a libertarian philosophy saying that the greatest evils are: first and foremost Land Monopoly; Chattel Slavery; Alcohol; and Monopoly of the Law. This copy has been extra- illustrated with the suite of appropriate engravings by G.L. The date is confirmed by its citation in a Congressional report "Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer On Charges Made Against Department Of Justice By Louis F. Post And Others." "We have on many occasions issued to you calls for action. We have told you that protest meetings will not help to free the thousands of social war prisoners but only by real action through the starting of the general strike throughout the entire country will they be freed. You did not listen to us who urged action. You chose the easier road. You listened instead to politicians who asked you to beg of the exploiters of America to be so kind as to release those whom they imprisoned. We remind you of the mistakes that you have made and how you have been fooled and betrayed." Warns that those who participate in May Day parades sponsored by the National Security League "will be traitors to our class" calling on readers to mark May Day instead by forming anarchist groups to begin a general strike. "When we march or hold our meetings we must never forget to be armed to repel those misguided soldiers or policemen who will dare to attack us as they have done until now! . The First of May should be the signal for the start of the social revolution in this country." The author whose original name was Shmuel Marcus went by many pseudonyms the best-known of which was Marcus Graham; he claimed to be a native of Montreal but when the United States attempted to deport him to Canada Canada refused on the grounds that there was no actual evidence of his Canadian citizenship. Other attempts to deport him to Mexico and the Soviet Union were similarly rebuffed. The author went on to edit the newspaper Man! one of the most important American anarchist publications of the 1930s. unknown books
