S. particularly New Brunswick Nova Scotia New York Michigan Ohio Massachusetts Virginia Georgia etc. He was commissioned to study the soils of New Brunswick Canada and this book was the result of his travels and studies in Canada and the U.S. He presents a sympathetic view of America and comments in detail about agricultural and social conditions. He was a "Reader in Chemistry and minerology at the University of Durham" and most of his works relate to the interaction of chemistry and geology to agriculture. This is the true first edition and contains 2 volumes as issued by the publisher. Pagination of the two volumes: volume 1 xvi 415 p. 24 publisher's ads ; volume 2 xii 512 p. 2 p. publisher's ads for Works of Prof. Johnston.There is a nice clean bright folding map of "Northeastern America to Illustrate Notes on North America" in volume 1; the map is not torn.
