He was a "Reader in Chemistry and minerology at the University of Durham" and most of his works relate to the interaction of chemistry and geology to agriculture. This is the true first edition and contains 2 volumes as issued by the publisher. Pagination of the two volumes: volume 1 xvi 415 p. 24 publisher's ads ; volume 2 xii 512 p. 2 p. publisher's ads for Works of Prof. Johnston.There is a nice clean bright folding map of "Northeastern America to Illustrate Notes on North America" in volume 1; the map is not torn.
