Its founder and editor Thomas Bywater Smithies believed that pictures were the best way to promote Christian morals temperance and the world wide abolition of slavery. The magazine was supported by the great politician and social reformer Lord Shaftsbury and Florence Nightingale distributed it to troops during the Crimean War. A scarce volume of 72 issues dating from the magazine’s golden period featuring several issues with outstanding front-page wood engravings by John Gilbert and including one by Harrison Weir. S.W. Engraved by James Smillie known for his exquisite "bank note" engraving. Appearing in The New York Mirror 1833. A waterfront scene with remnants of the wall of North Battery 1809 - 1831 & also called the Hubert Street Battery a circular 16 gun fort connected to the riverbank by a drawbridge in the area of modern day pier 27. Also depicted are sloops and a Hudson River steam boat just leaving the dock. At the time of this engraving the area between Barclay and Hubert Streets had become the site of the Washington Market. Small chip to top margin a few spots of faint foxing at margins otherwise very good. 9 X 7 1/4 unknown

S. particularly New Brunswick Nova Scotia New York Michigan Ohio Massachusetts Virginia Georgia etc. He was commissioned to study the soils of New Brunswick Canada and this book was the result of his travels and studies in Canada and the U.S. He presents a sympathetic view of America and comments in detail about agricultural and social conditions. He was a "Reader in Chemistry and minerology at the University of Durham" and most of his works relate to the interaction of chemistry and geology to agriculture. This is the true first edition and contains 2 volumes as issued by the publisher. Pagination of the two volumes: volume 1 xvi 415 p. 24 publisher's ads ; volume 2 xii 512 p. 2 p. publisher's ads for Works of Prof. Johnston.There is a nice clean bright folding map of "Northeastern America to Illustrate Notes on North America" in volume 1; the map is not torn. There is a little light cover wear and the tops and bottoms of the spines in both volumes is worn else this is a nice clean tight and unmarked 2 volume set that is not foxed.
