Complete 12-volume set of the Author's Definitive Edition of the writings of American physician neurologist and novelist Silas Weir Mitchell. Uniformly bound in olive green cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration top edges gilt with deckled fore and bottom edges. A handsome early twentieth-century collected edition containing Mitchell's major fiction essays and historical works. Bindings remain bright and solid with light shelf wear; interiors clean with only occasional age toning typical of the paper. A well-preserved example of this substantial literary set.</p><p>Provenance: From the library of W. H. Surratt of Baltimore son of John H. Surratt who was accused of involvement in the Abraham Lincoln kidnapping conspiracy and grandson of Mary Surratt who was executed in 1865 for alleged participation in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy.</p><p>Condition: Very good</p> The Century Co hardcover

BAL 14065. <br/><br/>First edition of Mitchell's anonymous collection written and published for the benefit of the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Blanck's "Intermediate sheets" binding B with a gift inscription to the front free endpaper "Emily Yarnall/from Aunt Sally/December 25/66." The book was advertised as "just published" on December 15 1866. Blanck cites this very copy which was once in the collection of Harvard. J. B. Lippincott Company hardcover books

First edition of this charming insect adaptation of the 1001 Nights in which Fuz-Buz the fly buys himself time after being caught in Mother Grabem's web. Though best known for his contributions to neurology Silas Weir Mitchell also published children's books and poetry. As typical for this period this book was issued in late 1866 for the holiday market but 1867 is printed on the title page to extend its market relevance. According to the Bibliography of American Literature this state of the book is quite rare with all of the illustrations found in the large paper edition. 6.75'' x 5''. Original green publisher's cloth binding with gilt stamped designs. Full-page black-and-white frontispiece with eight full-page black-and-white plates. 79 1 pages. Bookplate of Nellie E. L. Parker to front pastedown; pencil inscription to front flyleaf "Christmas. Dec 25th. 1866." Faint rubbing to boards with a bit of mild bumping to extremities.
