La prima parte dell'opera compresa nei primi due voll. e' dedicata agli studi di fisica pura e principalmente ai lavori sulla teoria della luce. La seconda parte, contenuta nel 3o tomo, contiene molti lavori di carattere piu' tecnico, in particolare dedicati alla realizzazione di fari. La maggior parte dei lavori di Fresnel era stata pubblicata su riviste di conseguenza, l'edizione di questa monumentale opera, permise di diffondere la conoscenza di questi studi basilari. Di grande importanza per le sue scoperte in campo fisico, fu la realizzazione di particolari integrali, detti appunto di Fresnel, grazie ai quali fu possibile studiare rifessione, rifrazione, interferenza e diffrazione
