De Havilland's erasure and correction (to 'al' in 'survival') ; On light blue typing paper. Dated September 17, 1983, Paris, France, to Roy Hensel, Carlisle County School, Bardwell, Kentucky. "Dear Roy Hensel, Many, many thanks indeed for your recent kind letter and for your generous comments about my work. Under seperate cover the GONE WITH THE WIND still you sent me for my signature will soon be on its way to you. Regarding your questions: 1) I think there are several reasons for the enduring popularity of GONE WITH THE WIND: its theme is universal as it deals with conflict, defeat, and renaissance--an experience familiar to all peoples, all nations. 2) Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and I were cast in our roles before any of the principal filming had begun, and our selection was announced simultaneously in January, 1939. 3) I do feel that Sidney Howard's adaptation of the novel was very faithful to the spirit of the book and to all its most significant elements and details. 4) Clark Gable was always perfectly prepared for his role, highly professional in every respect. With very best wishes to you and to your students, Most sincerely, Olivia De Havilland" Signed in ballpoint pen. Folded once lengthwise and once across. Folds hardly noticeable. Letters are two-toned, blue and red. Nice letter, great content
Probably Mitchell's most interesting letter. To the editor of the San Antonio Light, San Antonio, Texas: "Dear Sir: I am Mrs. John R. Marsh (Margaret Mitchell) of Atlanta, Georgia, author of 'Gone With the Wind'. I am writing you about an item published in your newspaper on August 5, 1947, stating that 'Mrs. John R. Marsh (Margaret Mitchell) , nationally known author had just arrived in San Antonio from Mexico City. With this item you published a photograph with the caption 'Margaret Mitchell Back to Hollywood'. I have learned that this woman also autographed copies of my novel 'Gone With the Wind' and in other ways created the impression she was me. This has caused me great embarrassment and I must ask you to publish a correction. I was not in San Antonio on August 5 and I have never been in your city, much to my regret. I have never been in Mexico City, where you said I had been, and I have never been in Dallas or Hollywood, where you said I was going. The photograph you published is not my photograph and does not resemble me in any manner. (...) " ; 2 pages
To Mr. Cordell, Atlanta Constitution: "Dear Mr. Cordell: It must be obvious that if there were any news available on the musical version of "Gone With the Wind", such news would not have been kept secret. - Please believe that I am completely sincere in wishing to cooperate with you on the piece, which cooperation would be in our own selfish interests. I wish I could tell you precisely when I could give you the information you seek, but this too is impossible. Frankly, I don't know. My suggestion is that we make a note here to put you on our mailing list for this information at the time it is given to other newspapers and magazines. Would this be satisfactory from your standpoint? With kindest regards, Sincerely yours (signed) DOS (initialed); 1 pages
